India will play their five-match ODI series against New Zealand from November 4, 2026 at Eden Park in Auckland. Having won the T20I series 3-2, India will hope to carry on that winning momentum into the longer format of the game but one big question ahead of the first match is whether Ruturaj Gaikwad will get a chance in the playing XI or not?
With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returning to the ODI set up, competition for batting positions will be fierce. Shubman Gill will lead India in the first three matches while Mitchell Santner will captain New Zealand side.

Will Ruturaj Gaikwad get a chance in the Playing XI?
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s selection will be one of the talking points ahead of first ODI. Right-hander has been included in India’s squad for series and he will get an opportunity to stake his claim for a place in ODI setup.
However getting into the playing XI won’t be easy. India’s batting line-up already comprises Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul.
Shreyas Iyer is also part of the leadership group as vice-captain for the first three ODIs so there is competition for middle order positions.
Gaikwad could get an opportunity at No.4 if the management decides to experiment with its batting combination but Shreyas Iyer is also a strong contender for that slot as well.
As of November 3, the official playing XI has not been announced yet. Gaikwad’s inclusion will thus be in doubt until the toss.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Return to ODI Action
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli coming back into India’s batting line up adds a lot of experience.
Both will be part of India’s plans as they continue preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Shubman Gill will captain the side for the first three matches and Shreyas Iyer will lead India in the final two ODIs.
KL Rahul, Axar Patel and Ishan Kishan will also be available for India giving the management flexibility in picking its combination.
What to Expect at Eden Park?
Eden Park has relatively short boundaries which can aid aggressive batters. The ground also helps fast bowlers when there is movement with the new ball.
India will look for Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill to set up the opening partnership but Virat Kohli’s experience in middle overs could prove handy.
New Zealand will be relying on home conditions and the experience of players like Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner.
Where to Watch IND vs NZ 1st ODI Live in India?

- Television: Sony Sports Network

Can India Continue Its Winning Momentum?
India will go into the ODI series confident having won the T20I series 3-2 but it is another format altogether when you are playing against New Zealand at home.
Apart from the result, the opening match will also give India an opportunity to see how their batting combinations and bench strength work.
If Ruturaj Gaikwad gets a place in the final XI then it could be an important first ODI for him. Fans will be waiting for toss to find out whether he gets his chance in Auckland or not.
