Posters carrying the words “RTGS Thief B.Y. Vijayendra” were put up outside Vijayendra’s residence as demonstrators gathered to register their protest. Similar posters were also reportedly pasted outside former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa’s residence. The protesters accused the two BJP leaders of making derogatory remarks and demanded that the statements be withdrawn, followed by a public apology.
The controversy follows a viral video from a BJP programme in Davangere, in which Vijayendra is seen allegedly making derogatory remarks against the Congress government while criticising the recent increase in milk prices by Rs 8 per litre in Karnataka. The remarks have triggered a political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the BJP.
The Karnataka Cabinet approved the Rs 8-per-litre increase on October 29, with the revised rates coming into effect on November 1. Of the increase, Rs 7 is intended to go directly to dairy farmers, while Re 1 is allocated to milk unions towards operational expenses.
Congress leader B.K. Hariprasad criticised the alleged remarks, arguing that political protests have their time, place and language, but that the language used in this instance was disrespectful and unacceptable in political discourse. The Congress has also warned that if the remarks are not withdrawn within the next three days, it will organise protests across the state.
What Funny Times We Live In
The ruling parties are now protesting against the opposition. At the Centre, it is the BJP doing this, while in our state, Congress is doing the same. Though the reasons might be different.
