India will attempt to put a poor T20I campaign behind them when they take on England in the opening match of the three-match ODI series on Tuesday, July 14 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
After losing the T20I series to Ireland and getting England 4-0 whitewashed on the way for the Men in Blue, they turn their focus to the 50-over game. The ODI series also marks the start of India’s preparations for the next year’s ICC ODI World Cup, and so the match is even more important.
Shubman Gill will lead a balanced team that combines experienced campaigners with young gun players. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are back in the Indian team after missing the T20I leg of the tour.
The visitors have also welcomed back KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, and Gurnoor Brar, and Bumrah's return is expected to help India's pace attack in English conditions.
But injuries have forced India into two changes. Fast bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out with a Grade 1 hamstring injury, while spinner Varun Chakaravarthy will also miss the series after suffering a Grade 2 hamstring injury. Prince Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi are drafted in for the squad.
England also made some great additions to their team under Harry Brook. New Sussex all-rounder James Coles has also been called up for the first time, and pace bowlers Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson, and Saqib Mahmood strengthen the bowling attack.
The hosts will once again rely on the experienced batsmen Joe Root and Jos Buttler to lead the team with the batting unit. Buttler, who has struggled in the last T20I series, will now have to get back into the rhythm of his game in the longer white-ball game and will have to make up for this.
England also enters the ODI series after some big changes behind the scenes. Brendon McCullum has been removed as the Test coach by the England and Wales Cricket Board, but he will still lead the white-ball team after Ben Stokes has retired from international cricket.
