The Indian women’s cricket team on Sunday at 7:00 PM will be in a do-or-die game against group leaders Australia in what is a game of chance for a spot in the semi-finals.
Australia has already secured qualification to the last four after dominating the group stage but for India the equation is simple - win and almost guaranteed to make it to the semi final.
India Enter with Momentum
India will go into the match with confidence after a comfortable win over Bangladesh in their last match.
Bangladesh scored 136 runs in the first innings, a lot of runs that were never going to be enough against an Indian side that was very confident. The Women in Blue were able to reach the target in 16.2 overs and they kept wickets.
The victory brought India two key points not only but also improved their Net Run Rate (NRR) significantly which is very important in the race for the semi-finals.
A Win Changes Everything
India’s superior Net Run Rate gives them a major advantage over South Africa.
If India defeats Australia, they will almost certainly still make it to the semi-finals (if other teams fail). If they beat the top group toppers then it will send a message to all the other teams in the competition.
But the challenge could hardly be more difficult to accomplish.
Australia has been the most complete team in the tournament winning every match and already clinching top spot in the group. Now that they have qualified, they will be eager to keep their perfect record going as they go to the knockout stage.
Eyes on South Africa vs Bangladesh
Another crucial match, of course, could shape the qualification race before India's match begins, will take place before India’s match begins.
South Africa Women will take on Bangladesh Women at 3:30 PM.
If South Africa loses, India's path to the semi-finals would become much easier. However, with current form, South Africa will be overwhelming favourites against Bangladesh.
That means India cannot afford to rely on other teams doing them a favour.
Pressure on Harmanpreet Kaur's Side
The Indian team knows that their destiny is in their own hands.
Instead of Bangladesh producing a major upset against South Africa, Harmanpreet Kaur and her players have the chance to settle the qualification race themselves by beating tournament favourites Australia.
The batting unit has found rhythm, the bowlers have delivered under pressure, and the team’s improved Net Run Rate is a great cushion. Now all that remains is one last push against the strongest team in the group.
One Step Away from the Semi-Finals
With Australia already through and South Africa breathing down their necks, India will face their biggest challenge of the tournament so far.
Victory would almost certainly send the Women in Blue into the semi-finals and keep their title hopes alive. However, defeat would leave their fate in someone else’s hands, leaving India to hope Bangladesh can upset a strong South African side.
India has no better time to deliver their best performance. The equation is simple, the stakes are enormous, and a place in the semi-finals is on the line.
