The Indian Premier League auction will return to India after a three-year overseas stint. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to organise the IPL 2027 player auction in India, a return to home soil for the event after recent editions in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi.
The decision was among the key developments from the IPL Governing Council meeting held on Tuesday, September 15. The 2027 auction is expected to be a mini-auction and is likely to take place in December, although the date and venue have not yet been announced.
The move ends a three-year period in which IPL auctions were conducted outside India. The last auction conducted in India was the 2023 auction in Kochi.
From Kochi To Dubai, Jeddah And Abu Dhabi
The IPL auction moved overseas after the 2023 event in Kochi.
The 2024 auction was held in Dubai, while the 2025 mega-auction took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The 2026 mini-auction was held at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on December 16, a third consecutive year overseas, with the overseas trend continuing.
The decision to bring the 2027 auction back to India apparently follows feedback from franchises about the logistical and operational difficulties involved in taking large delegations abroad.
Hosting the event in India should make travel and accommodation arrangements easier for teams, while the BCCI will still need to choose a venue that can accommodate the franchises, their support staff, and auction infrastructure.
The exact city has not been confirmed yet. We know that venue selection will also take hotel availability into account because the auction window is during India’s busy wedding and festive season.

IPL 2027 Auction Expected To Be A Mini-Auction
The 2027 event is expected to follow the mini-auction format rather than the larger mega-auction model.
That means the franchises will primarily use the auction to fill gaps in their existing squads following player releases, trades, and other roster decisions. The final number of available slots and the purse available to each team will depend on those decisions.
Details of the player list and team-wise purse for the 2027 auction are not available. As of now, the auction is scheduled to take place in December 2026.
It will thus be a very effective auction opportunity for franchises to strengthen a particular area of their squad for the 2027 season. Teams will also need to balance their spending with their current player combinations and overseas player requirements.
The BCCI's decision to hold the event in India could also make it easier for franchise owners and support staff to attend without the travel to other countries involved in recent auctions.
As a result, the Impact Player rule is still in play.
Another issue that was discussed at the IPL Governing Council meeting was the Impact Player rule, but no final decision was made on whether it will continue in its current form.
Teams’ and players’ opinions about the rule have been mixed. It allows a team to use a substitute player in a match, adding a tactical element to the match.
The Governing Council will then discuss the matter again, and another meeting could take place in the next month.
Meanwhile, the domestic cricket calendar for 2026-27 has already attracted attention as the Ranji Trophy will be divided around the white-ball domestic competitions. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy will be played during a break in the Ranji season, coinciding with the IPL auction window.
At the moment, the biggest confirmed development is the return of the IPL auction to India. After three consecutive overseas editions, the 2027 mini-auction will once again be held on home soil.
The BCCI will announce the date and venue once logistics and availability are set, but until then, franchises will be preparing for another critical phase of squad building before IPL 2027.
