Ishan Kishan turned his century from the first day into a double hundred on the second day and East Zone won the title. That innings was an example of patience, aggression and power as he kept the South Zone bowling attack pinned down.
Kishan started the second day unbeaten on 111 and he made his intentions clear. And having already set the stage with a composed century on the first day, the East Zone captain continued to accumulate runs without the pressure of a final to affect his concentration. He reached 150 from 204 deliveries before moving towards the biggest milestone of his innings.
The landmark double century finally appeared in the second session. Kishan reached 200 off 270 balls with a boundary against Devdutt Padikkal. At that point his innings had already included more than two dozen boundaries and two sixes and showed that he could combine classical first-class batting with the attacking style that has become an integral part of his game.
Such an achievement was significant not only because of the quality of the innings but also because of the records associated with it. Kishan became the first East Zone batter to score a double century in a Duleep Trophy final. Before his innings, Wriddhiman Saha’s 170 against Central Zone in the 2012 final was the highest individual score by an East Zone batter in the summit clash of the tournament. Kishan went past that mark before reaching 200.
Kishan also became one of the few batters to achieve a double century in a Duleep Trophy final. His performance put him alongside some of the famous names in Indian domestic cricket including Raman Lamba, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Anshuman Gaekwad and Yusuf Pathan. His innings thus became one of the most impressive individual performances in the history of the prestigious domestic tournament.

Another contribution was that Kishan was selected as wicketkeeper and captain in the Duleep Trophy final. Kishan became the first wicketkeeper to score a double century in the Duleep Trophy final and surpassed Dinesh Karthik's previous record of 183. As the wicketkeeper of East Zone and the captain of the team, Kishan's performance added a degree of significance to an already great achievement.
Kishan also showed how much ability he has to play in various formats and situations. In the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy season, he had previously scored 273 in first-class cricket for Jharkhand against Delhi. He also smashed 210 against Bangladesh in an ODI in 2022 in a memorable match-up. It’s the second double hundred in his career that is now another big step in a career that has resulted in him producing some of his highest-end performances in domestic and international cricket.
Kishan was also supported by a strong batting effort from his teammates. Kumar Kushagra played a key role for the captain and shared a great partnership with Kishan. Shikhar Mohan and Abhimanyu Easwaran had earlier made vital contributions to East Zone building a big first-innings total. Kishan had already hit his double century when East Zone took control of the cricket field.
Kishan's innings is another important step in his domestic comeback. His domestic cricket performances have kept him in the limelight and he has now led East Zone to the final of a big tournament and has had a chance to show his leadership and the way he will open and close a double century. This performance is only enhanced with a long period of time at the crease and a double century is made possible.
The Duleep Trophy final is thus another chapter in Ishan Kishan's cricketing journey. From his century on the first day to 200 on the second day Kishan showed he had the temperament for a long first-class innings and he was not afraid to play with his attacking instinct. And his double century has not only cemented East Zone's place in the final but has also etched his name in the history book of the tournament.
