Manav Suthar became the 319th Indian player to take the test in Test Cricket. The 23-year-old from Rajasthan was given his debut cap by his partner Kuldeep Yadav ahead of the one-off Test match against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. This was an especially special moment because the venue itself was hosting its first Test match.
Suthar has made his way to the national team from the very start of his career through good domestic cricket. Since making his first-class debut for Rajasthan in 2022 he has played 29 games, taking 129 wickets at an average of 25.76, including six five-wicket hauls. His innings have also been useful, with 945 runs at 25.5, one century and six fifties. These all-round contributions made him a great player in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic contests.
His recent performance only strengthened his case for selection. In the Ranji Trophy 2025–26 season, Suthar took 18 wickets in three games and 13 wickets in 10 matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Although his IPL 2026 stint with Gujarat Titans was nothing special, his turn and bounce on flat pitches impressed the selectors in the longer format, particularly for the longer formats.
On his debut, Suthar joined a spin-heavy Indian team with Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar, and Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja absent. His selection is in line with India's plan to strengthen spin options so that the team is not so short of depth in that area which is a bedrock of the team's strength. The cap Kuldeep gave him was symbolic; it showed the responsibility is on the next generation of spinners.
Suthar's bowling style has earned the praise of several veterans, among them Ravichandran Ashwin who praised Suthar for his overspin and rotation skill. With the assistance of Chennai’s TNCA first-division league as a base for his game, Suthar has developed into a versatile bowler able to adjust to different conditions. His idolization of Ashwin has certainly shaped his game and is a very promising prospect for India in the future.
Manav Suthar’s debut is a big deal not only for him but also for Indian cricket. He is the first specialist spinner to debut in Tests since Axar Patel in 2021, and the selection process is about nurturing new talent. For fans, his rise is a manifestation of India’s rich spin history, and his journey from the domestic arena of Rajasthan to the national stage is an inspiring story of perseverance and skill.
