Matthew Hayden (former Australia opener) has attacked the Australian selectors for bringing Nic Maddinson back to the Test team for the South Africa series.

Hayden questioned the selection standards and argued that Australia's domestic first-class cricket system was being overlooked when players were picked for the national team.

Hayden takes aim at Australian Selectors

Hayden made his comments on the All Over Bar The Cricket podcast, reporting on October 6, 2026.

The former Test opener was particularly critical of Maddinson’s selection and claimed that a player with limited recent first-class cricket experience shouldn’t be preferred over some consistent performers in Australia’s domestic league.

Hayden described the selection approach as the “greatest pile of mediocrity” he had seen in a generation of Australian cricket.

He also questioned whether players averaging in the mid-30s in domestic cricket could suddenly be expected to produce much higher numbers at Test level.

Why was Nic Maddinson selected?

Maddinson's return has attracted attention for the unusual circumstances of his recall.

The 34-year-old last played a Test for Australia in the 2016-17 home summer. He scored 27 runs across three Tests and had not played a first-class match since early 2025.

His latest chance came after injuries affected Australia's batting options.

Josh Inglis was ruled out of the first Test after a broken finger and Cameron Green suffered an abdominal injury and was ruled out of the opening Test in Durban.

Maddinson had, however, produced an impressive recent limited-overs performance, scoring 126 for New South Wales in the One-Day Cup against Victoria.

Maddinson's Comeback Story

Maddinson's selection also comes after a major personal battle.

The left-handed batter had testicular cancer in 2025 and underwent surgery and chemotherapy. He then came back to cricket and was appointed New South Wales captain for the current season.

Australia coach Andrew McDonald defended the selection by pointing to Maddinson’s prior performances and his ability to bat in different positions.

McDonald also said Maddinson had remained on Australia's selection radar and had been considered a quality player against spin.

Hayden would like stronger first-class standards.

Hayden has one main concern beyond Maddinson himself.

The former opener argued that players should be rewarded for sustained performances in Sheffield Shield cricket and Australia needed to maintain stronger standards when selecting Test players.

He also questioned the availability of some established players for domestic red-ball cricket, saying the wider issue was the importance being given to first-class cricket.

His comments therefore opened a wider debate about whether Australia’s Test selection process is giving enough weight to consistent domestic performance.

Australia prepares for South Africa Test Series.

Australia will begin their three-Test series against South Africa on October 9 in Durban.

With Green out for the first Test, Maddinson is among the players in the mix for a place in Australia's batting order. Cooper Connolly is another option, as well as the final team will be determined by the conditions and balance Australia wants to achieve in Durban.

Hayden’s comments have added another layer to the build-up, putting Australia’s selectors under the spotlight just days before the first Test.

The debate now is whether Maddinson can justify the selectors' faith with performances on the field.
