Mukesh Kumar delivered one of the biggest performances of the 2026 Irani Cup final as Rest of India defeated Jammu & Kashmir by 167 runs in Srinagar.
Bengal's fast bowler finished with 6/33 in the second innings and helped bowl J&K out for just 111 when chasing 279. His match figures were 8/121, and he was one of the key reasons Rest of India won the trophy.
The decisive performance came on October 4, 2026, the fourth day of the five-day Irani Cup final at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium. Rest of India’s 167-run victory is recorded in the official BCCI match centre.
He asked for the ball and delivered
The one moment that has really attracted some attention is when Mukesh asked stand-in captain Sarfaraz Khan for another over.
J&K were still in the contest at 54 without loss and chasing 279. Mukesh came back and immediately changed the game, removing Shubham Pundir and then bowling captain Paras Dogra.
According to the reports, the extra over was one of the turning points in the match. Mukesh continued his spell after lunch and finally got his five-wicket haul and finished with six wickets.
The BCCI itself pointed out his 6/33 spell in a video released after the match, highlighting how important his bowling was to Rest of India’s success.
Why New Zealand Makes This Performance Important
Mukesh’s performance comes at an interesting time for India’s Test plans.
India will tour New Zealand for a two-Test series starting on 19 November and the second Test is on 27 November. The conditions in New Zealand should not only assist seam bowlers but swing and movement will be very useful for seam bowlers as well.
That is where Mukesh’s recent form could become relevant.
His strength has been that he is able to move the ball and keep lines together and not just go at a high pace. And indeed, his Irani Cup spell demonstrated how effective those qualities can be when conditions are favorable.
Mukesh’s India Experience
Mukesh is no stranger to international cricket. He has played three Tests for India and got his first cap in 2023 against the West Indies.
He last played a Test for India in 2024, so this Irani Cup performance is an opportunity to remind the selectors of his red-ball skills. Hindustan Times said six of his seven Test wickets at the time had come overseas, which is good news given India’s upcoming New Zealand match.

Competition Will Be Tough
Mukesh's performance doesn't automatically give him a good chance to get selected.
India has several pace options, while Akash Deep also strengthened his own case in the Irani Cup final after returning from injury. He took 3/25 in J&K’s second innings and finished with six wickets in the match.
But Mukesh has given the selectors another reason to consider him.
With New Zealand ahead, his ability to exploit movement could make him an intriguing option for India’s Test combination.
It was a timely reminder for the selectors
The Irani Cup final might have ended in a Rest of India victory, but Mukesh Kumar came away with something potentially more precious: momentum.
His 6/33, eight-wicket match haul and ability to produce a decisive spell when his team needed it most have put his name back into the conversation.
