Pranavi Urs scripted a historic chapter in Indian golf at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 as the first Indian woman golfer to win an individual gold medal in the history of the continental competition.
The 23-year-old golfer from Mysuru produced a composed performance at Kasugai Country Club to finish at 15-under par and claim the top spot in the women's individual event.
Urs’ gold was part of a memorable double-medal performance for the Indian women’s golf team. Besides her individual gold, she helped India win the silver medal in the women's team competition alongside Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar. It was a twin medal performance and the achievement in the Asian Games was one of India’s greatest achievements.
Going into the final round, Urs had already established herself as one of the leading contenders for the individual title. The pressure increased as the last round went on and Yin Ruoning and Singapore's Shannon Tan were strong contenders. Yin, who was world number one and a major champion, was a huge challenge for the Indian golfer.
Urs had the hardest start in the first nine when a low-scoring start threatened her lead. But she did not let the pressure of the last round take over her play. The good ball-striking and confident approach shots were what she had to do on the back nine to regain all momentum.
The 13th hole was especially important. Urs had a birdie that gave her a big boost to win the lead and regain her sole lead. In the final stages of the competition, she had to maintain her lead and she was still putting pressure on her closest competition.
The closing holes are another test of Urs’ concentration. Rather than taking unnecessary risks she managed the course and made excellent par saves on the finish line. Ultimately her ability to protect the lead under pressure was the key as she won the four-round tournament at 15-under par.
It also surpasses India's previous best individual performance in women's golf at the Asian Games. At the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games Aditi Ashok won the individual silver medal and became the first Indian woman to win the individual golf medal at the continental event. Urs has now taken it one step further by becoming India's first women's individual golf gold medallist at the Asian Games.
Urs contributed equally much in the team event. Her consistent performance helped India to earn a good score in the aggregate along with Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar. The Indian trio was able to capture the silver medal and China won the team gold.
For Indian golf the result is a landmark moment. The country has had a lot of great individual performances on the individual side at global tournaments in the past and Urs's achievement is a historic women's individual gold for India's Asian Games record.
Urs was also fantastic to perform so well on the biggest stage and against a lot of international players. Her strong play in the final holes, the way she recovered from early setbacks, made a decisive birdie and kept her nerve and cool at the end of the game is what made her a gold medalist.
The success at Kasugai Country Club gives Indian golf two medals from the women’s competition and is another major accomplishment for the country’s golfers at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. Urs’ individual gold and team silver also highlight the depth of India’s women’s golf team.
Urs’s Asian Games campaign will be one of her greatest accomplishments in the professional game. At just 23 she has already cemented her place in Indian sports history as the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games individual gold medal in golf.
The result also adds to the growing profile of Indian women's golf on the international stage. Urs led the individual event and Ashok and Dagar won team silver and India finished the women's golf competition with two medals and a historic gold.
