ChENNAI: India’s opening combination in T20 internationals has once again become a talking point with Sanju Samson under intense pressure after a modest score against the West Indies and teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi waiting for his opportunity.
Samson’s experience versus youth question has been a topic for quite a while in his international career and now the selection debate has put all the pressure back on him.
Samson has been moved around India's top order over the past two years, and has had to make way for other opening options on a number of occasions. Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan have been in the selection conversation, and Sooryavanshi has added another dimension to the competition.
Samson’s journey has not been straightforward. His batting role changed as he entered big tournaments like 2025 Asia Cup and preparation for T20 World Cup earlier this year. Such changes can make it difficult for a batter to settle into a consistent role. But Samson’s own performances have also contributed to questions about his place in the playing XI.
Samson’s World Cup Redemption
Samson showed some great resolve in the T20 World Cup despite the uncertainty of position; he made it through the first half of the tournament. He went back to the team after missing out and scored three consecutive half-centuries in the second half of the tournament. He played a major role in India winning the title and the final against New Zealand on 8 March was the best performance that he did.
That run of performances appeared to boost Samson’s place in the team. After an important role in India’s World Cup victory, the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter could reasonably have expected a longer run at the top of the order. But that position was soon under pressure once again after a number of games in Ireland and England when Sooryavanshi came into the picture.
Since the T20 World Cup, India have played 17 games. Samson has played in 11 of them and opened in 10 of them. He has scored 179 runs (on average 30.75), with a strike rate of 186.36, as per the figures. Six times he has been dismissed for single-digit scores, which adds to questions about his consistency.
Sooryavanshi adds to India’s selection puzzle
Sooryavanshi, just 15, has attracted attention for his aggressive batting and potential to make an impact at the highest level. And although he has played eight games and moved in and out of the side, he has managed 246 runs and an average of 30.75 runs at a strike rate of 186.36, based on the supplied statistics.
Abhishek Sharma has also performed well throughout the period with 509 runs in 17 matches while Ishan Kishan has scored 400 runs in 14 games. This is the kind of performances which allow the team management to take a different approach and look at the balance and composition of the opening partnership and decide how to make the team in that partnership.
The talk is not simply about the replacement of one player with another. Samson brings international experience and the confidence gained from his World Cup performances, while Sooryavanshi is a young talent the team management may want to develop in the international environment. The decision will be based on the team’s current needs, the players’ present form and the role each is expected to perform.
Asian Games Final adds To The Pressure
The selection debate also recalls India’s men’s cricket final at the Asian Games, where Samson was moved to No. 3 to accommodate Sooryavanshi against Pakistan. Samson was dismissed early, while Tilak Varma helped India finish strongly and secure the gold medal.
Samson had an opportunity to make a statement on a different batting position in the match but failed to take advantage after early dismissal and no one can see how he can take advantage of that. Each such performance has only added to the pressure of his place, especially when a young player is waiting for an opening.
As we prepare for the West Indies series, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel explained why keeping Sooryavanshi around the senior team is important, even though he is not in the playing XI. He said the teenager will benefit from having exposure to experienced players, training at international level and watching senior batters prepare and construct innings.
His comments suggest that India’s management views Sooryavanshi’s presence as part of a longer-term development process, rather than as an immediate replacement for Samson.
Ranchi T20I Could Renew The Debate
With the next match in Ranchi on Friday, attention will turn to the opening combination and Samson’s response to the latest challenge. One low score in the opening T20I has reignited the discussion, but a single innings alone does not settle the larger issue of selection.
Samson has already demonstrated during the World Cup that he can perform under pressure. Now, he has to do that in his long-term life and make the most of the opportunities. But Sooryavanshi is going to keep on learning and show that he can translate all that into consistent international contribution.
In the end, India’s opening conundrum indicates the depth of options to the team. Samson’s presence and recent World Cup success must be weighed against his latest numbers and Sooryavanshi’s promise. The upcoming series of games could clarify things, but the immediate job for Samson is clear: convert the renewed scrutiny into another strong response at the crease.
