On October 29, Aramane Ulisi Horata Samiti staged a protest in Mysuru to protest the comments by District Minister Dr. Yathindra Siddaramaiah about the Mysore Palace and the erstwhile royal family. Protesters asked the minister to resign because they said those comments were derogatory and inappropriate.
More than 350 protesters gathered in front of Kote Anjaneyaswamy Temple in Mysuru on Wednesday morning to oppose the minister’s remarks. The demonstration was initiated despite a plea by Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, a member of the erstwhile Mysore royal family, to hold off their agitation.
The protest was organised under the banner of the Aramane Ulisi Horata Samiti which stands for the palace and the history of the Palace. Participants were not impressed by what they felt was crude speech of the royal family and the historic Palace.
The demonstrators called for accountability from the minister and insisted that his comments warranted his resignation. Their talk revealed the sensitivity surrounding the Mysore Palace, which is a historical landmark that is deeply connected to the royal history of the region and the culture.
Pramoda Devi Wadiyar’s appeal to withdraw the protest added another dimension to the development. Although she asked the members to stop their agitation, the protesters continued with the demonstration on the basis of the calls for action on the minister’s comments.
The crowd of more than 350 people indicated that the matter had much wider interest among people involved in the campaign. That they would continue the protest for the same reasons despite the appeal showed that they were not afraid to oppose the remarks.
The Mysore Palace is a historic landmark in Karnataka and remains one of Mysuru’s most recognisable landmarks. It is associated with the Wadiyar dynasty and attracts people who are interested in the architecture, traditions and royal past in the area. So any discussion about the Palace and the erstwhile royal family can have cultural and historical significance for some of the people in the city.
The demonstrations brought attention to the relationship of public representatives to institutions or families with historical heritage. Public comments on certain topics can get reactions from people, especially if they think the comments are disrespectful.
The main demand of the protesters was the resignation of Dr. Yathindra Siddaramaiah for the remarks that they attributed to him. That the comments which led to the protest and any response from the minister were not disclosed in the information about the protest was not made available.
The development took place in Mysuru on October 29, when members of Aramane Ulisi Horata Samiti made their position known through a public demonstration. Pramoda Devi Wadiyar’s appeal of calling off the agitation did not prevent the protest.
And there could be more to come as to whether the minister responds to the allegations and whether the protesters continue their campaign. But for now the demonstration has reignited the debate over the state of the Mysore Palace and the erstwhile royal family and the demands for the resignation of the minister.
