India won 39 medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, which put together a total of 39 medals and a fourth place finish on the medal list. The country's most impressive win came from the triple jumper Selva Prabhu, who took a bronze medal. The double podium was achieved by a double podium with fellow Indian athlete Pravin Chitravel winning the silver medal. But Selva Prabhu is also very proud of having won the gold medal at the international level; a gold medal would have been in his hands if he hadn't been injured in the middle of the competition.
Even though he had a problem with food poisoning a few days before his event, Prabhu defied the odds and went for gold for the country. As Prabhu said in his very first interview with PTI, he was disappointed and he tried to cope with the disappointment and in his world of sports, he did not even want gold and he wanted gold that is so I should do it, he said. In his thoughts, he said he will bring his own best to the world in the future and he will work hard to get better at the technical skill level.
Selva Prabhu won the bronze medal at the Glasgow Games with a jump of 16.52 meters. He placed just behind silver medallist Pravin Chitravel, who recorded a jump of 15.58 meters, and gold medallist Jordon Scott of Scotland, who secured the top place with a leap of 16.72 meters. Even though food poisoning took its toll on his performance, he shared a podium with a fellow Indian and he proved the depth of the country's triple jump talent.
After the Commonwealth Games, Selva Prabhu is already onto the Asian Games 2026 that starts in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan on September 19. He wants to be one of the two triple jumpers that will represent India at the event and so he is targeting a gold medal. At the National Inter-State Championships, which was made up of the official qualifying event, Prabhu scored third place with 16.79 meters, which is well above the Asian Games qualification standard of 16.28 meters. However, as only two athletes are eligible in each discipline, the race for selection is intense and the nation is eagerly waiting to see if the bronze medallist of the Commonwealth Games will make it to the final for Japan.
