India Women's Cricket reached another big milestone in the form of young spinner Shree Charani in the semi-final of the Women's Asia Cup 2026 against Bangladesh in Dubai. The left-arm spinner was also the fastest Indian bowler to get 50 wickets in T20Is, surpassing the record of men's team star Kuldeep Yadav.
Charani achieved it in 29 T20I games, one match ahead of Kuldeep, who had taken 30 matches to get to his 50-wicket mark. The victory shows how quickly the 22-year-old has established herself as one of India’s most important spin bowlers in the shortest format.
Charani Completes Milestone Against Bangladesh
The historic moment was in Bangladesh’s chase in the semi-final of the Asia Cup. Charani picked up Bangladesh’s opening batsman Juairiya Ferdous in the sixth over to take her 50th T20I wicket for the team.
Ferdous tried to play across the line against Charani’s delivery but managed only a top edge. Richa Ghosh took the catch and sent the Bangladesh batter back for 14 runs from 18 balls.
Charani continued to put pressure on Bangladesh’s batting line-up. For India, her control and the ability to bowl consistently in the right places have been the key.
Charani had 50 wickets in 29 matches, ahead of many well-known Indian bowlers. Kuldeep Yadav had 30 matches and Varun Chakravarthy 32 matches. Arshdeep Singh took 33 matches, while Radha Yadav took 36 matches.
Charani is also among the fastest bowlers in the world to achieve that mark in women’s T20I cricket. China’s Mengting Liu has already taken 50 wickets in 28 games. New Zealand’s Leigh Kasperek and West Indies’ Anisa Mohammed have done so in 29 matches as well.

A Rapid Rise For India's Young Spinner
Charani’s record is another point in the great rise since she made her international debut. In April 2025, she made her ODI debut and then made her T20I debut in June 2025 against England.
Her performances were even more impressive in 2026. Charani was the top wicket-taker at the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup with 14 wickets in five matches at the tournament. She had 4/19 against the Netherlands and also had some key performances against South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Australia.
Charani was able to rise to the top of the ICC Women’s T20I bowling charts from those performances. She has also been part of the Delhi Capitals team in the Women’s Premier League and has gained some valuable experience in this area at a domestic level.
That success only solidifies her place in the Indian women's spin attack. Charani is only 22 years old, has 50 T20I wickets, and has already surpassed one of India's most prominent men's spinners in terms of the number of matches to achieve that.
