Iyer has been called up as the captain of India’s T20I team for the series to Ireland in late June, the five-match tour to England and the Asian Games in Japan. Iyer has made a remarkable comeback after his IPL campaign for Punjab Kings and now he has been handed command of India in the lead up to the 2028 Olympics and T20 World Cup.
Tilak Varma, as vice-captain, will be joining Iyer as well. The team is a youth-oriented group and some of the IPL stars are selected. Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and the record-breaking 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi who took the bat in IPL 2026 came to the fore.
The decision follows India’s re-engineering of its T20 strategy. Suryakumar Yadav who took India to T20 World Cup gold last summer has been sidelined, not only does it make a difference for the performance of young players on the international stage but it also shows that the selectors are open to experimenting with their combinations.
Iyer’s appointment is a reward for his persistence and consistency. In spite of the recent injury in recent years, he was back to form and he was the captain of Punjab Kings in IPL 2026 with his batsmanship and tactical know-how. His leadership skills and his ability to anchor innings make him a good point of reference for India’s next generation of cricketers to follow.
The upcoming tests for Ireland and England will be important. Experienced European teams will provide India with much-needed exposure and the Asian Games in Japan will be a multi-sport dimension for them. It is the right mix of experience and youth in terms of international competitions that these tournaments will help the nation in its preparation.
Last but not least, Shreyas Iyer’s elevation to captaincy is another big moment in India’s T20 narrative. With Tilak Varma to be the deputy and a young and talented team in which India has a lot of youngsters, India will be able to push, explore, grow up and prepare for the future, and is ready to do so. Iyer will be a target for fans to follow as he leads the team on a packed schedule of things as captain and is given that responsibility and opportunity on his shoulders too; that is to say: he will not take things up any less than the rest so he is one of the few people who will be there to be able to do it and be able to take a lot of risk, as a leader.
