Stephen Fleming recently emerged as the most likely candidate for England’s next Test coach. This comes at the end of several high-profile interviews with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for the coaching post.
Fleming has now been chosen to take over Brendon McCullum, who was last year England's Test coach and who has been the longest-serving with four years. McCullum resigned from the team after a disappointing home Test series loss to New Zealand. His job was under the microscope and under pressure when England's performance in the Ashes was poor in the first half of last year, and the series loss to the Black Caps effectively ended his coaching career.
With the international calendar speeding up, England's immediate red-ball focus will be on a three-match home Test series against Pakistan in August and September. The ECB would like to finalize the appointment and have the new head coach in place prior to the start of the series. England is therefore under pressure now to make some headway in the ongoing 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and to get to the top in the official rankings.
Despite the board’s wish for a quick succession, Fleming’s immediate availability is also an unknown to the board. It is not clear whether the new coach will be able to take charge in time for the opening match against Pakistan and when Fleming will come to the club as manager. So the ECB is working towards the final details of the contract and onboarding schedule, so the appointment of Fleming represents a change in the way England’s red-ball team will go and in their strategy at the international level as they seek to find consistency and compete with each other.
