Vaibhav Sooryavanshi came agonisingly close to registering his first first-class century today, but his brilliant innings ended at 92 in the Duleep Trophy match. The young Indian batsman tried to make it to the boundary when he faced Harsh Dubey but fell short of Arshad Khan on the boundary and Central Zone got a huge breakthrough.
Sooryavanshi had been in top form in both innings and appeared to have a chance of turning his second first-class half-century into a hundred. But his aggressive approach ultimately left him just eight runs short of the target. The young batsman dropped his bat and walked away from the field so obviously disappointed with the result.
The 15-year-old played a very attacking game and scored 92 runs from 81 balls. He took seven fours and seven sixes and achieved a 113.58 strike rate. His aggressive batting set up East Zone and provided a good start to the innings before Central Zone could break it up.
Sooryavanshi Falls Trying to Clear Boundary
The dismissal occurred on the second delivery of the 26th over. Facing Dubey, Sooryavanshi attempted a slog sweep that he thought could send the ball over the boundary. He did not get the elevation or placement and Arshad Khan was standing close to the boundary.
Arshad made the catch successfully, completing Sooryavanshi's entertaining innings. The dismissal was painful for the young player, who was eight runs away from his first first-class hundred.
His reaction reflected the disappointment immediately. Sooryavanshi, as he walked away from the crease, smashed his bat into the ground, the report said. And that was how much the century meant for the young batter, after he had built a dominant innings.
Although he was not able to reach the century, Sooryavanshi's 92 was one of the best innings of that match. His fast pace to score against a good domestic attack showed his aggressive approach and confidence at the top.
Historic Record for Sooryavanshi
Even if the century was still not attainable, Sooryavanshi still managed to make it into the Duleep Trophy record books. In his 92-run innings, he became the youngest batter to score a fifty in the prestigious domestic competition.
He got the milestone at 15 years and 157 days, another major achievement in his cricket career. And it also illustrated the talent of the teenage batter which has caught the eyes as he is still young and plays a physical game.
The innings also marked Sooryavanshi’s second first-class half-century. While his overall first-class numbers have not yet shown his potential, the latest knock was excellent and showed the potential he has to perform at a higher level.
Sooryavanshi made his first-class debut against Mumbai in Patna during the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season. Prior to this match, he had played nine first-class games and scored 215 runs across 13 innings, with an average of 16.53.
So his latest innings will be very important from a confidence point of view. A score of 92 against strong domestic foes is a good opportunity for him to build on it and be more successful over the longer period.

Big Opening Partnership with Easwaran
Sooryavanshi’s contribution was also significant because of his partnership with Abhimanyu Easwaran. The two made up a marathon 161-run opening stand that provided East Zone with a great platform.
Their partnership combined Sooryavanshi's attacking strokeplay with Easwaran's experience and stability. Sooryavanshi always found the boundary but Easwaran kept the innings on track at the other end.
The opening partnership put East Zone in a good position before Central Zone finally made inroads. Once Sooryavanshi was dismissed, the pressure was on the rest of the batters to keep up the momentum created by the openers.
Central Zone Fight Back
Central Zone managed to gain considerable momentum after Sooryavanshi's dismissal. Harsh Dubey struck again after removing the young batter and dismissed Kumar Kushagra for a golden duck with the next delivery.
The quick succession of wickets shifted the momentum of the innings. Easwaran and Sudip Kumar Gharami then tried to rebuild, adding 39 runs for the third wicket.
Easwaran was later dismissed by Aryan Pandey, leaving East Zone in a tougher position. East Zone was 213/5 in the 41st over as Central Zone kept fighting back.
The sequence showed how quickly a strong batting position can change in first-class cricket. Sooryavanshi’s departure was followed almost immediately by another wicket, giving Central Zone renewed hope.
A Missed Century But Important Knock
The 92-run innings of Sooryavanshi will likely be remembered both as an achievement and a missed opportunity. A century would have been a landmark for him, especially considering his age, but his aggressive approach was also key to the innings.
The teenager’s seven sixes and seven fours proved his willingness to attack the bowlers rather than simply accumulate runs. That was what ultimately led to his dismissal, and so he managed to achieve 92 from 81 balls.
In his development as a first-class player, he needs to learn when to attack and when to consolidate. The experience of falling eight runs short of a century could be valuable in becoming more familiar with longer-format cricket.
But at least Sooryavanshi can take comfort from becoming the youngest batter to score a fifty in the Duleep Trophy and from producing one of the most entertaining innings of the match. The century may have slipped away, but the performance showed another glimpse of the young batter’s potential.
