West Indies vs India 2nd T20I: Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford produced a sensational batting display as West Indies chased down India’s massive total of 249 to win the second T20I by six wickets in Ranchi on October 9, 2026.
West Indies embarrassed India with a record run chase to 252/4 in just 18.3 overs. The victory put the five-match T20I series at 1-1, and gave the visitors a memorable win after India had already posted a huge total.
India Post a Massive Total of 249
India won the toss and made the most of a batting-friendly pitch at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. The Indian batters attacked from the beginning and put the West Indies bowlers under pressure.
Sanju Samson took India’s innings to 82 in 41 balls. He played attacking shots and helped India build a strong foundation. Ishan Kishan also contributed 43 runs, and made good runs in the middle overs to score.
India ran forward at the end of the innings through Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma’s 83 runs from just 32 balls and India completed a total of 249/5 in 20 overs.
With 250 runs needed to win, India appeared to have enough runs on the board to put the West Indies under serious pressure.
Shai Hope Steers the Historic Chase
West Indies were thrown a by-break when Mayank Yadav struck two batsmen at the first ball in the opening over. The visitors came under pressure but Shai Hope stayed calm and focused on rebuilding the innings.
Hope scored a record 102 in 45 balls with powerful hitting and good shot selection. There were nine sixes in his innings and West Indies kept up the required score.
Sherfane Rutherford provided the perfect support, getting 84 runs off 37 deliveries. He attacked the Indian bowlers and changed the momentum of the match with his aggressive batting.
The pair shared a match-changing 120-run partnership for the fourth wicket. The partnership turned a tough chase into a real chance and kept the West Indies in control of the game.
India Struggle to Defend 249 Runs.
Despite Mayank Yadav’s three wickets, India was unable to prevent the West Indies’ aggressive batting from attacking and taking control of the game. The Indian bowlers were unable to contain the scoring, especially as Hope and Rutherford were always finding boundaries regularly.
Heavy dew and a batter-friendly surface also made bowling difficult. India's captain Shreyas Iyer later cited the conditions and the small margin for error as reasons behind the defeat.
Hope eventually sealed the victory by hitting Axar Patel for a six, bringing up his century in spectacular fashion.
West Indies Level the T20I Series.
The West Indies finished at 252/4 in 18.3 overs and won by 6 wickets with nine balls left. It is the team's highest successful run chase in men's T20 internationals and second-highest in the entire world.
The result gives the visitors fresh confidence ahead of the third T20I in Indore on Sunday, October 11.
India will have to improve their bowling and fielding, after losing for close to 250. Meanwhile, the West Indies will take confidence from Hope and Rutherford’s performance in the series.
