Gilli Nata’s victory in Bigg Boss Kannada 12 had delighted millions of fans, but the celebrations also presented a tough reality check: the so-called “Take-Home” prize. Even though he is receiving ₹50 Lakh in cash, the expensive luxury Maruti Suzuki Victoris car, and a generous ₹10 Lakh presented to him by Kiccha Sudeep, the genuine amount hit by Gilli’s bank account will be considerably lower thanks to India’s strict tax regulations.
Understanding the 30% Tax Rule
In India, winnings received on reality TV, lotteries, or game shows are in the category of “Income from Other Sources.” Under Section 194B of the Income Tax Act, any prize over ₹10,000 shall incur a flat 30% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS). Not only is this tax mandatory regardless of the winner's income bracket, but no deduction (like 80C or 80D) may be claimed against it.
The Math Behind Gilli Nata’s Winnings
Gilli Nata’s total cash prize (including Sudeep’s gift) is ₹60 Lakh. Even non-cash prizes (in the form of prizes in kind) are taxable under Indian law. Gilli Nata has to pay the 30% tax on the car (approximately ₹18 Lakh) before he can collect or legally own the vehicle.
| Prize Component | Awarded Value | Tax (30%) | Net Take-Home |
| Main Cash Prize | ₹50,00,000 | ₹15,00,000 | ₹35,00,000 |
| Sudeep’s Gift | ₹10,00,000 | ₹3,00,000 | ₹7,00,000 |
| Total Cash | ₹60,00,000 | ₹18,00,000 | ₹42,00,000 |
Impact on Runner-Up Rakshitha Shetty
But the tax rule does not only apply to the winner. Rakshitha Shetty, who pocketed ₹25 Lakh (₹20 Lakh from Sai Gold Palace and ₹5 Lakh from the Jar App), is going to be subject to a significant deduction as well.
- Overall Awarded: ₹25,00,000
- Tax Deduction (30%): ₹7,50,000
- Actual Amount Received: ₹17,50,000
A Costly Victory
While the exposure and promotions after the Bigg Boss victory could not be more worth it, the money comes at a cost – nearly a third of the prize money goes to the government. For Gilli Nata, as he "won" prizes worth nearly ₹80 Lakh, after paying off the car's tax and the TDS, his liquid cash will be closer to ₹35 Lakh.
