Sawan Shivratri 2026: Date, Jal Abhishek Muhurat, Nishit Kaal and Char Prahar Puja Timings You Should Know

This festival falls in the holy month of Sawan (Shravan), and on this day we fast, pray at night, chant Om Namah Shivaya and we make the ritual Jal Abhishek of Shiva Linga.

Sawan Shivratri will be celebrated on Thursday, July 16, 2026. The festival is celebrated with great devotion in temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, where thousands of devotees gather to offer water, milk, honey, curd, bel leaves, dhatura, and flowers to the Shiva Linga.

Sawan Shivratri 2026 Muhurat

According to the Hindu Panchang, the Chaturdashi Tithi associated with Sawan Shivratri begins and ends as follows:

  1. Chaturdashi Tithi begins: July 16, 2026 – 08:45 AM.
  2. Chaturdashi Tithi ends: July 17, 2026 – 09:18 AM.

On the day of Jal Abhishek, devotees can perform Jal Abhishek throughout the day on July 16, and the Nishita Kaal is one of the most auspicious times for worship of Shiva.

Abhishek with pure water, milk, honey, and sacred Ganga water while chanting Shiva mantras is believed to bring divine blessings.

This midnight period is highly auspicious for worshiping Lord Shiva as it is the divine time associated with Mahadev.

Char Prahar Puja Timings

Devotees who follow the traditional night-long worship can perform the four Prahar Pujas during these approximate times:

  1. First Prahar: 07:25 PM - 09:58 PM
  2. Second Prahar: 09:58 PM - 12:31 AM
  3. Third Prahar: 12:31 AM - 03:04 AM
  4. Fourth Prahar: 03:04 AM - 05:37 AM

Each Prahar is dedicated to prayers, Rudrabhishek, chanting Shiva mantras, and meditating on Lord Shiva.

Importance of Sawan Shivratri

Sawan Shivratri is one of the most auspicious days to seek Lord Shiva's blessings. Sawan is especially important to Mahadev.

During this period, Jal Abhishek is believed to help remove obstacles, bring marital harmony, grant spiritual growth, and fulfill wishes.

Many unmarried devotees fast on this day or pray for an ideal life partner, and married couples pray for happiness and prosperity in their family life.

Devotees also recite the Shiva Chalisa, Rudrashtakam, and Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra throughout the night.

How to Perform Sawan Shivratri Puja

Start the day with a holy bath and wear clean clothes. Offer water, milk, honey, bel leaves, white flowers, sandalwood paste, fruits, and incense to the Shiva Linga.

Chant Om Namah Shivaya or the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and fast according to your tradition.

The festival is filled with bhajans and Shiva kirtans, and many devotees stay awake during the night to participate in bhajans and Shiva kirtans, making the festival a spiritually uplifting experience.
