The new model will have a fresh design and a new design at least for Mahindra's lifestyle but definitely with a rugged exterior and will feature new looks but the same rugged qualities that have made it Mahindra's best-known lifestyle SUV.

The teaser is entitled “An icon, now more iconic” and is focused on the Thar’s grille and off-road character. Another teaser shows the SUV covered in mud further cementing the concept of the vehicle as an adventure vehicle. The full exterior, however, has not yet been revealed.

Design changes expected

The 2026 Thar facelift is expected to see a new front fascia inspired by the bigger Thar Roxx. Test vehicles suggest changes could involve a redesigned grille, updated LED projector headlamps with C-shaped daytime running lights, a revised bumper and new alloy wheels.

The changes can also be made to the rear, with new LED tail lamps and bumpers redesigned. However, even with all these changes, the SUV is expected to remain the same three-door shape, upright stance and boxy shape.

More features inside

Mahindra is not revealing the entire cabin yet, but it has been reported that the facelift will have some additional comfort and technology features.

These may be a digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, a 360-degree camera, auto-dimming inside rear-view mirror and ventilated front seats.

There are also reports that infotainment and cabin equipment are upgraded. These features should be regarded as expectations until Mahindra officially confirms them at the launch.

Engines likely to continue

The facelift will also carry the current petrol and diesel powertrain options. The current Thar fleet consists of a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 152hp, a 1.5-litre diesel producing around 119hp and a 2.2-litre diesel producing 132hp.

The bigger petrol and diesel engines are equipped with automatic transmission and four-wheel drive, while the smaller diesel is equipped with a manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. Not many mechanical changes are expected with this facelift.

Launch and expected price

Mahindra is expected to launch the new Thar on September 22 and hold a launch and drive event in Jodhpur. The company will also announce the details, variants and pricing at the event.

The current Thar is priced around Rs 10.32 lakh to Rs 18 lakh, ex-showroom depending on the variant. The facelift could see a price revision, but the final figures will only be known after Mahindra's official announcement.

With its modern design, perhaps better equipment and familiar off-road-oriented mechanical package, the 2026 Mahindra Thar facelift is going to have to be seen more closely when it is officially launched on September 22.
