The German carmaker has halted work on the rugged luxury SUV as it looks at the long-term product strategy in order to deal with the rapidly changing world of cars, according to several media reports. The G74 was supposed to be BMW’s entry into the premium off-road SUV segment dominated by existing names such as G-Class and Defender. But the company is wondering whether the niche segment can generate enough returns to justify the significant investment required to build an all-new platform and vehicle.
Many factors are believed to have contributed to BMW’s decision, which is based on the company having to deal with tighter European emissions regulations, ever-increasing pressure on the company from Europe, global tariffs, trade barriers, currency movements and political uncertainty, and others. BMW's CEO Milan Nedeljkovic said at the company's second quarter financial results presentation that it is currently reviewing its future vehicles. “We are looking for technologies, powertrains and model variants that will still be commercially viable in the years to come,” he said.

Nedeljkovic identified the rapid transformation of China’s automotive industry as one of the biggest challenges facing the company. Chinese manufacturers are expanding aggressively into Europe, Latin America, and many other global markets, putting pressure on established premium brands such as BMW.
Although BMW did not officially mention the G74 as part of the projects under review, industry reports indicate that the off-road SUV is among the first models impacted by the company's strategic reassessment.
For now, those hoping to buy a BMW alternative to the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Land Rover Defender may have to wait longer as BMW is currently trying to tailor its portfolio to market requirements and regulations for the latest market requirements and regulatory requirements.
