Mahindra has increased the programme of Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) across all Electric Origin SUV brands in India. This has now been expanded to Mahindra XEV 9e, XEV 9S and all variants of BE 6 SPORTEQ. The customer pays a lower price in advance and the battery and the vehicle can be financed on their own. The announcement was made on 28 August 2026 as Mahindra wants to make electric SUVs available to a broader range of consumers.
Under the new BaaS structure, the Mahindra XEV 9S starts at ₹12.65 lakh and the XEV 9e starts at ₹13.90 lakh. Both prices are ex-showroom and are offered through a dual-financing model. The battery financing has a usage cost effective of ₹3.75 per km for the BE 6 SPORTEQ which has the lowest entry price as of now at ₹11.45 lakh.
The BaaS programme is intended to separate the financing of the vehicle from that of its battery. Rather than paying the whole battery cost upfront as part of the vehicle purchase, customers can finance the vehicle and battery separately. This could reduce the initial purchase price and make premium electric SUVs more accessible to buyers who are worried about the high upfront cost of EVs.
Mahindra says the battery financing has an effective usage cost of ₹3.75 per kilometre. The company has also suggested that the battery EMI can start at ₹6,975, on the basis of a daily running average of 60 km, specific down payment and applicable tenure. However, the actual battery EMI can vary depending on factors such as battery capacity, financing tenure and down payment.
The important part of this announcement is the expansion of BaaS to every BE 6 SPORTEQ variant. When BE 6 SPORTEQ was launched, the BaaS option was limited to the lower Pack One and Pack Two variants with a 59kWh battery only. Mahindra has now opened the programme to the entire BE 6 SPORTEQ range, which would also allow the buyers of higher variants access to the same ownership structure.
The BE 6 SPORTEQ itself was introduced with a revamped variant structure, new technology and various battery configurations. Depending on the variant, 59kWh, 70kWh and 79kWh batteries are available. The new electric SUV also has a three-screen digital cockpit on the variants, connected car features and technology-based improvements.
For the XEV 9e and XEV 9S, the BaaS programme is a significant reduction in the upfront entry price. Without BaaS, the XEV 9S starts around ₹20.65 lakh and the XEV 9e about ₹21.90 lakh, both ex-showroom. With the BaaS structure, the initial vehicle price is nearly ₹8 lakh lower, but the battery financing is now a separate financial commitment.
It is important to understand that BaaS is a financing product rather than a typical pay-for-use battery rental plan. Mahindra describes it as a dual-financing structure and the effective per-kilometre figure is based on financing assumptions. Charging expenses, together with other ownership costs, are separate.
Mahindra now has all of its Electric Origin SUV portfolio under the BaaS programme. The move will allow customers more flexibility when it comes to financing an electric SUV and could cut one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: the high upfront purchase price. For BE 6 SPORTEQ, XEV 9S and XEV 9e, buyers will get the same structure in different price points and SUV segments.
Mahindra’s recent move also highlights the growing importance of alternative ownership and financing models in India’s electric vehicle market. As manufacturers compete to attract customers to EVs, reducing the initial financial commitment could become an increasingly important strategy. For Mahindra, extending BaaS across all three Electric Origin SUVs is a significant step towards making its premium electric portfolio more accessible while retaining a separate financing mechanism for the battery.
