Mahindra XEV 9S Takes No. 1 Spot In August EV Sales, Beats Tata Punch EV By 78 Units

The Indian electric passenger vehicle market had another competitive month in August 2026, with Mahindra XEV 9S being the highest-dispatched electric car in the country. The three-row electric SUV narrowly lost out to Tata Punch EV, with only 78 units separating the two in wholesale dispatches.

Sales data from AutoPunditz indicate that Mahindra sent 4,508 units of XEV 9S to dealerships in August. Tata Motors sent 4,430 units of Punch EV, putting it in second position. The situation highlights the ever-competitive electric car market in India, as well as the fact that established players are aggressively selling their EVs and new ones are emerging like wildfire.

In the August rankings, Tata Motors still has a strong presence in the category with five models in the top 10 electric passenger vehicles list. Mahindra had three models on the list, while MG Motor and VinFast also appeared.

Mahindra XEV 9S Records Strong August Performance

The Mahindra XEV 9S has been gaining momentum since customer deliveries started in January 2026. The model’s August wholesale sales of 4,508 units was a 9.1 per cent increase from the 4,131 units sold in July.

The electric SUV has three battery pack options of 59kWh, 70kWh and 79kWh. Depending on the selected variant, Mahindra aims to reach a driving range of between 521km and 679km on a full charge.

The XEV 9S is priced at Rs 20.65 lakh, ex-showroom. The three-row arrangement of this electric SUV is so different that it really catches the eye of buyers who want a large electric vehicle with more seats.

The August numbers indicate that the XEV 9S is becoming an important model for Mahindra's electric vehicle portfolio. Its narrow lead over the Punch EV also shows how close some of India's leading EVs have become in monthly dispatch volumes.

Tata Punch EV Finishes Close Behind

In August, Tata Punch EV came very close to taking the top spot. With 4,430 units sent out, it was only 78 units behind the Mahindra XEV 9S.

The Punch EV's performance is especially impressive because it is much lower in price. Tata's electric compact SUV starts at Rs 9.79 lakh, ex-showroom, which is accessible to a wider range of buyers than the larger premium electric SUVs.

The Punch EV also experienced a huge year-on-year increase. Its August 2026 dispatches were more than three times the 1,476 units recorded in August 2025.

Tata's success was not limited to the Punch EV. The Nexon EV came in third place with 3,975 units, showing 44 per cent year-over-year growth. The Punch EV and Nexon EV demonstrate Tata's capacity to compete across price and vehicle segments.

MG Windsor EV Holds Fourth Position

MG Motor's Windsor EV came fourth in the rankings with 3,705 units sent to dealerships in August.

But the model was down 18 per cent year-on-year when compared to 4,511 units in August last year. The Windsor EV was still among the country's leading electric passenger vehicles in volume, despite the decline.

Its continued presence near the top of the sales chart shows the growing competition between established electric models and newer launches from Mahindra, Tata and other manufacturers.

Harrier EV And XEV 9e Feature In Top Six

Tata's Harrier EV finished fifth with 2,103 units, adding another model to the company's excellent electric vehicle performance.

In sixth place was Mahindra's XEV 9e with 2,001 units. The model is part of Mahindra's expanding electric SUV range and is in line with XEV 9S.

The presence of both Mahindra models in the top half of the list shows the growing focus of the company on electric SUVs. While the XEV 9S took the top position, the XEV 9e also crossed the 2,000 units mark during the month.

Tata Sierra EV And VinFast LimoGreen Enter The Top 10

Tata Sierra EV placed seventh with 1,930 units in August. The recently introduced electric model was followed by VinFast's LimoGreen with 1,901 units.

The LimoGreen's performance is significant since it is one of the new names competing in India’s rapidly growing electric vehicle market. Its ranking in the top 10 shows that new entrants are starting to take off and compete with established manufacturers.

Tata's Tiago EV came in ninth place with 1,730 units. Mahindra's BE 6 completed the top 10 with 1,696 units, up 9 percent from the same period last year.

Tata Motors Has Five Models In The Top 10

Tata Motors had the largest representation in the top 10 in August, with five electric vehicles making the list. The Punch EV, Nexon EV, Harrier EV, Sierra EV and Tiago EV all accounted for 14,168 units during the month.

Tata's overall EV product portfolio is large and covers a lot of different regions and price groups. From the relatively affordable Tiago EV and Punch EV to larger electric SUVs such as the Harrier EV and Sierra EV, the brand has products for all types of customers.

Mahindra also had three models in the top 10, namely the XEV 9S, XEV 9e and BE 6. MG Motor's Windsor EV and VinFast's LimoGreen completed the ranking.

Wholesale Dispatches And Customer Registrations Are Different

What the August numbers illustrate is important. The numbers are wholesale dispatches, or vehicles sent by manufacturers to dealerships. They should not be taken as a measure of the number of cars purchased or delivered to individual customers during the month.

Actual registrations provide a different picture as vehicles may be held at dealerships for a long period of time before they can be sold and registered. Data from the Vahan platform can then differ from manufacturer dispatch figures.

The August wholesale rankings, however, provide an indication of how manufacturers are supplying the market and which models are receiving strong dealership volumes.

India's EV Competition Continues To Intensify

The August 2026 rankings show that India's electric car market is becoming more competitive. Mahindra's XEV 9S is the winner, Tata's Punch EV is within 78 units and several models from both manufacturers are shown as well, which is indicative of the variety of options available to consumers.

Tata's presence in the top 10 and Mahindra's growing electric SUV portfolio suggest that competition is no longer limited to a few early EV models. And with new products such as the Sierra EV and LimoGreen also entering the market, the market could be even more diverse as manufacturers introduce more electric vehicles.

For August, though, the Mahindra XEV 9S emerged as the top model by wholesale dispatches, narrowly edging out the Tata Punch EV and adding another significant milestone to Mahindra's growing electric vehicle presence.
