Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: Expected Route, Timings, Stops and Travel Time Explained

Bengaluru to Mumbai rail trains are expected to travel much faster than Mumbai railways with the new Vande Bharat Sleeper train. The overnight service would connect Karnataka's capital to Mumbai's financial capital with the city and provide air-conditioned sleeper accommodation and modern passenger facilities.

As of now, we have been told that the proposed service would run around 1,118 km between Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai. The journey would take less than 16 hours, which will be faster than the existing train services on the route.

The train has been reported as a possible October 2026 launch with operations possibly starting after Dussehra. We do not have the date of arrival, timetable, fare structure and last list of stoppages of trains in the information available here. Passengers should wait for an official Indian Railways announcement before making travel arrangements based on such proposals.

Here are seven things one should know about the proposed Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper service.

1. Bengaluru-Mumbai Journey Could Take Under 16 Hours

The biggest expected advantage of the proposed train is its travel time. The journey between Bengaluru and Mumbai could take less than 16 hours, compared with approximately 24 hours on the existing Udyan Express, according to the information provided.

If the proposed travel time is achieved, passengers could save several hours on the busy intercity route. The overnight service could particularly be useful for professionals travelling for work, families visiting relatives and tourists planning trips between the two metropolitan cities.

An overnight sleeper service would also allow passengers to travel while resting and arrive at their destination the following morning. The actual time savings will depend on the final schedule and the stops approved by Indian Railways.

2. Expected Route and Terminal Stations

The proposed service will connect Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal in Bengaluru with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai. The route will be roughly 1,118 km long connecting important destinations in Karnataka, Maharashtra and around the country.

The choice of terminal stations could make the service useful for passengers travelling to and from major parts of both cities. But travellers should verify the actual boarding station before booking once reservations are in place.

The final route and operating arrangements will be decided by the railway authorities. The route, operating days or terminal stations could have an effect on the journey time and convenience for passengers.

3. Tentative Departure and Arrival Timings

The proposed timetable suggests that the Mumbai-to-Bengaluru service could leave CSMT at 8:10 pm and reach SMVT Bengaluru at 11:55 am the next day.

For the return journey, the Bengaluru-to-Mumbai service is expected to leave SMVT Bengaluru at 7:50 pm and arrive at CSMT at 11:55 am the next morning.

These timings are tentative and should not be treated as a confirmed railway schedule. The final departure and arrival times might change before operations begin depending on operational requirements and the approved timetable.

Passengers planning onward journeys need to check the official schedule when Indian Railways publishes the service details.

4. Proposed Stoppages Along the Route

The proposed trains will have the potential to go through a number of stations between Bengaluru and Mumbai and will make connection between the cities and towns in the corridor better for people coming from these cities.

The list of possible stoppages reported includes Dharmavaram, Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur, Wadi, Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune and Kalyan.

These stations would provide access to the service for passengers who don’t need to travel the entire distance from Bengaluru to Mumbai. Pune and Solapur, in particular, could be important points for passengers who are travelling in Maharashtra, while the train in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh could connect the train to more people.

However, this list is still provisional. The final stoppages, station arrival times and departure times will need to be confirmed through an official announcement.

5. Air-Conditioned Sleeper Accommodation for Overnight Travel

Unlike other Vande Bharat services which are mainly based on seated travel, the proposed Vande Bharat Sleeper will be for longer overnight trips. The Bengaluru-Mumbai service will have air-conditioned sleeper accommodation for passengers so they can rest during the trip.

The train would also have the ability to be more convenient for passengers with USB charging points and passenger doors programmed to open and close automatically. At night, travelling with an electronic device or boarding and alighting could be much easier.

The ultimate aim of a sleeper configuration is to combine the comfort of overnight rail travel with a more modern onboard environment. The final coach configuration, berth categories and ticket prices will need to be checked once official booking details are released.

6. Modern Safety and Security Features

Safety is expected to be a central component of the proposed train's hardware. CCTV cameras, emergency talk-back units and fire-detection systems all come as part of the equipment. The systems are meant to help train staff and passengers communicate with train staff in case of an emergency.

The train is also expected to feature crashworthy coach designs and special lavatory facilities. In addition, the Kavach train-protection system has been reported among the safety features associated with the service.

Kavach is India's indigenous automatic train-protection system to prevent some train collisions if it is implemented correctly and in operation. The exact equipment fitted to the proposed service should be confirmed by Indian Railways before passengers rely on any particular specification.

7. October 2026 Launch: What Passengers Should Know

The proposed Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper has been reported as a possible launch from October 2026 (likely after Dussehra). When and how commercial services will be launched is not yet confirmed.

Passengers will also be looking for confirmed travel information on fares and train details, train numbers, operating frequency, reservation opening date and the final timetable. These details are important for planning trips and comparison of the service with previous trains.

Until the railway authorities provide the final schedule, the proposed travel time, timings and stoppages should be taken as preliminary information rather than confirmed operational details.

What the New Vande Bharat Sleeper Could Mean for Travellers

If implemented with the expected journey duration, the Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper could provide a quicker overnight rail trip between two of India’s largest cities and be a good alternative for business and leisure travellers. There is the new sleeper accommodation, modern onboard facilities and a potentially shorter journey in mind for business and leisure travellers.

The big stuff to watch now are the launch announcement, confirmed timetable, fare structure and stoppage list for now. Once these are out, the passengers will know how the new service fits into the current railway network and will have a better idea how much time it could save on the Bengaluru-Mumbai route.
