Oben Electric has crossed a big production milestone in India by manufacturing more than 10,000 electric motorcycles. The Bengaluru-based electric vehicle manufacturer has achieved a major goal as it continues to scale up production and deliveries of its Rorr Evo electric motorcycle at a time when it is expanding its manufacturing operations and working to increase its retail and after-sales presence in the country.
The Rorr Evo has emerged as an important product for Oben Electric’s latest production push. The electric motorcycle went on sale in April this year and crossed 25,000 bookings in May. Deliveries have also started, so the company is now moving from order generation to wider customer fulfilment.
Oben Electric Crosses 10,000 Motorcycle Production Mark
The production milestone is part of Oben Electric’s growth in India. The company makes its electric motorcycles at its Bengaluru manufacturing facility, which is spread across 3.5 acres.
The plant has an annual production capacity of up to 1 lakh electric motorcycles and so Oben Electric has room to expand production as demand for its products increases. The company has been a vertically integrated manufacturing company and has developed and produced components within its own business.
Oben’s components are chargers, LFP battery packs, electric motors and vehicle control units. The company also creates its own software for electric motorcycles. Such integration can give an EV manufacturer greater input into product development and manufacturing as production volumes rise.
Rorr Evo Drives Production Expansion
The Rorr Evo is also an essential part of Oben Electric’s current growth initiative. From bookings of more than 25,000 a short time after it went on sale, the motorcycle has generated great consumer interest for the company.
The electric motorcycle is priced at Rs 1.25 lakh, ex-showroom. It is powered by a 9kW electric motor and a 3.4kWh LFP battery pack. Oben claims an IDC range of up to 180 kilometres for the motorcycle.
When combined with electric performance, claimed range and pricing, the Rorr Evo is in a very competitive segment of the electric two-wheeler market in India. As more and more manufacturers launch electric motorcycles and scooters, the range, charging time, battery technology, performance, pricing, and service availability are being considered as factors for buyers.
The production milestone for Oben Electric is therefore very important in the Rorr Evo's market journey. The company now needs to build on its production momentum and convert the backlog into deliveries and to provide services to the customers through its service network.
Bengaluru Facility Uses Vertical Integration
Oben Electric’s Bengaluru plant is a key part of its manufacturing strategy. Rather than relying solely on external suppliers for large EV components, the company has vertically integrated several systems.
The in-house development of battery packs, motors, chargers, vehicle control units and software can help the manufacturer coordinate product development more closely. It also gives the company greater control over how different components work together in its electric motorcycles.
The facility's stated annual capacity of 1 lakh motorcycles is significantly higher than the 10,000-unit production milestone recently reached. This means the company has huge installed capacity available if demand and market expansion allow it to scale production further.
Oben Electric Plans Wider Retail Presence
Manufacturing capacity is only one part of the expansion strategy for an electric two-wheeler company. Retail availability, servicing and customer support are also important as manufacturers try to reach buyers beyond their initial markets.
Oben Electric currently has more than 150 showrooms and dedicated Oben Care service centres in more than 90 cities in 18 states, the company said. The network also offers customers sales and after-sales service and supports in the company’s expansion into various parts of India.
The company also wants to expand its exclusive retail network further with 200 exclusive showrooms by the end of FY27. Should it be achieved, the expansion would boost the availability of Oben motorcycles and service and customer support would be more available to owners.
A wider retail network could also help shift interest in the Rorr Evo into actual sales. As the EV market matures, access to service centres and replacement support can be a very important consideration for electric motorcycle buyers.
Growing Competition In India's Electric Two-Wheeler Market
Oben Electric's production milestone has been in the middle of a growing electric two-wheeler industry in India. Established manufacturers as well as newer EV companies are competing across different price points, with products ranging from affordable electric scooters to performance-focused electric motorcycles.
In the case of companies like Oben, increasing production is important but quality and delivery times are just as important. A strong booking pipeline can open new routes for expansion, and having vehicles in hand (and support in the form of post-sales) can be very beneficial for the customer's experience long term.
The Rorr Evo’s reported booking figure has provided Oben with a huge order pipeline. The company’s next step is to marry production and distribution capabilities to this demand while expanding its presence across more cities.
What The 10,000-Unit Milestone Means For Oben
The production of 10,000 electric motorcycles is one step closer to Oben Electric becoming an Indian EV producer. That we have reached this level shows that the company has moved beyond the small volumes of production it had before and is building the infrastructure that will allow for bigger production.
The Rorr Evo is expected to remain a key component for this effort as deliveries continue and the company expands its retail network. Oben has a manufacturing capacity of over 1 lakh motorcycles annually and production is likely to go up significantly if demand remains strong.
The planned expansion of showrooms and service centres could build on that manufacturing ability to create even more sales and support services. For potential buyers, greater availability can assist in switching to an electric motorcycle by easing the burden of service and customer support.
For now, Oben Electric’s 10,000-unit production achievement is a big manufacturing milestone, while the Rorr Evo’s 25,000 bookings show the demand the company is looking to convert into deliveries. Although the company is scaling its factory output and retail network, it will have to stick to production, delivery and after-sales support to be able to grow.
