What was initially thought to be an unnatural death or a heart attack has now turned into a murder investigation after police uncovered an alleged assault in connection with an auto-rickshaw fare dispute. Sriram, a lawyer by profession, died after an argument with an auto driver near Ambedkar College in Bengaluru, the police said.
The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Annapoorneshwari Nagar police station. Police have arrested the main accused, Meghraj, an auto-rickshaw driver, and are investigating the case. A dispute over the fare turned into a confrontation, and the lawyer was assaulted, the lawyer said.
Sriram collapsed on the road when he encountered a medical emergency and subsequently died at a private hospital. But the injuries on his body raised suspicion among his family members, and that further scrutiny led police to investigate the possibility of murder.
Lawyer collapses Near Nagarabhavi Ring Road
The incident took place at around noon on October 9 near Nagarabhavi Ring Road. Sriram collapsed suddenly as he was walking along the road, and Hoysala police personnel rushed to the scene. They rushed him to a nearby private hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Despite all of their efforts, Sriram died at about 3 p.m. that day. Doctors initially thought he could have suffered a heart attack, he said. Police registered an unnatural death case and started the procedures as soon as they got the information they had at the time.
Sriram’s family members reported seeing injury marks on his body and became suspicious about the circumstances of his death. The family’s fears were raised about whether the death was due to a medical emergency or a physical assault.
As the family tried to understand what had happened, they learned that Sriram was involved in an argument with an auto-rickshaw driver on the day of the incident, sources said. It was a major lead in the investigation, and police were looking into the reasons behind his collapse.
Auto Fare Dispute Near Ambedkar College
According to the complaint and the details emerging from the investigation, Sriram was walking near Ambedkar College on October 9 when he sought an auto-rickshaw to travel home. A dispute broke out between him and the driver, Meghraj, over the fare.
The argument intensified, and both sides got into a heated exchange, Sriram said. Sriram decided not to take the auto-rickshaw and continued walking away from the place.
Police say Meghraj became angry after the dispute and followed Sriram with the help of his friends. The group allegedly pursued the lawyer and attacked him, delivering serious blows to his head.
The accused also took Sriram’s mobile phone and cash before leaving the scene. These allegations form part of the circumstances being examined by investigators.
The assault reportedly caused serious head injuries. Sriram continued walking for some distance before collapsing near Nagarabhavi Ring Road and was rushed to the hospital, where he died.
Postmortem Report Raises Questions About Cause of Death
The postmortem examination showed Sriram had blood in his head, which was crucial in understanding the circumstances of his death. All of this raised questions about the extent to which the fatal injuries may have been due to the alleged assault rather than to a heart attack.
The medical findings became an important part of the investigation as police tried to establish the connection between the reported confrontation and Sriram’s death.
With the family's complaint and the evidence emerging, Annapoorneshwari Nagar police changed the nature of the case from an unnatural death investigation to a murder case.
Police later detained Meghraj for questioning. The connection between the fare dispute, the assault, and the lawyer's death was investigated and studied.
That is a big deal, and the case is still being conducted, and investigators are working to get a complete picture of what happened and who actually had a role in it.
Police are still investigating the Bengaluru murder case.
Police have arrested Meghraj, whom they identified as the main accused, and are investigating. Police investigators are going to look into the circumstances of the alleged assault, Sriram's belongings being stolen, and the involvement of the accused driver's associates.
Witness accounts, medical analysis, and other evidence may also assist investigators in understanding what occurred before and after the confrontation.
A simple dispute about an auto-rickshaw fare can, in fact, escalate into serious violence. But the actual sequence of events and who is responsible should be determined through the police and legal process.
Sriram’s death has raised concerns about public safety and the implications of violent confrontations on city streets. It also points to the need to report suspicious circumstances when a death that was initially believed to have been caused by natural causes is accompanied by unexplained injuries.
Police are still investigating the lawyer’s death and determining whether more arrests are required, the police said.
