Naraka Chaturdashi (popularly known as Choti Diwali in many regions) has an important place in the Diwali celebrations. Hindu mythology tells us that on this day Lord Krishna defeated demon Narakasura. The story is remembered all over India as symbolic of destruction of evil and restoration of peace and righteousness.
In Karnataka and several other states people celebrate the occasion with traditional rituals, early morning oil bath prayers, festive preparations etc. Houses are cleaned decorated; families prepare special dishes and make arrangements for larger Diwali celebrations.
Diwali (Festival of Lights) is one of India’s most widely celebrated festivals. Lighting oil lamps, decorating homes, exchanging sweets, praying and spending time with family are all part of the celebrations.
The festival has different religious and cultural meanings in different parts of the country but the central message light overcoming darkness is universally recognised. For many people Diwali is also a time to reflect on the past, strengthen relationships and welcome new beginnings with optimism.
Shivakumar’s greeting focused on hope that the festival would bring happiness and prosperity into every home. He wanted lamps to burn forever in households so peace and joy would last not just one day but forever; he linked traditional symbolism of Diwali with values that are relevant in everyday life (kindness, honesty, harmony and determination to overcome difficulties).
The Deputy Chief Minister’s festive greeting comes at a time when people in Karnataka and the rest of the country are celebrating the festival with family get-togethers, religious ceremonies and traditions. Markets, residential areas and public spaces generally become more festively active during this period as people buy flowers, sweets, lamps, clothes etc for celebrations; families meet relatives to exchange greetings and share festive meals.
Naraka Chaturdashi and Diwali are not just about decorations and celebrations they remind us of the values associated with the triumph of good over evil. Lighting lamps is symbolic of knowledge, hope and positivity too. Shivakumar’s message echoed this wider meaning when he said people should welcome festival with faith and optimism.
His wishes have focused on how festivals should be celebrated with happiness and goodwill among communities. When people light lamps and celebrate with family members the message of peace, prosperity and righteousness is at the centre of it all.
DK Shivakumar in his greeting wished people of India and hoped that festival would bring a better future to every household, new hope and lasting happiness.
