Tamil Nadu Politics: Regupathy Targets Vijay Over Pudukkottai Programme

DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu minister S. Regupathy has criticised Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay for his recent visit to Pudukkottai. He said the programme did not have impact and announcements made during his tour were hollow.

In Chennai today, Regupathy said the Chief Minister’s visit on November 2 had little impact as there were not enough new initiatives for the district under that programme and why was bus stand inauguration done?

His comments have led to another political tussle between ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and opposition DMK in Tamil Nadu.

Regupathy Questions the Impact of Vijay's Visit

In a video statement shared by news agency ANI Regupathy said Chief Minister’s visit has not created any impact in Pudukkottai.

The DMK leader criticised arrangements made for the programme (postponing examinations at an educational institution because students would gather to see Chief Minister).

He said examinations at one college continued while those at another were postponed and then rescheduled. Regupathy criticised the inconvenience caused to students and asked whether the visit had brought any benefits to the district.

Bus Stand Inauguration Draws Criticism

One of Regupathy’s main criticisms was the inauguration of the new Pudukkottai bus stand.

He said the facility had already been improved so reopening it was not a major achievement of the visit and that new bus route announcements were not made during the programme.

The DMK leader said that there were no new announcements that would directly benefit the local residents in his visit.

What Did CM Vijay Announce in Pudukkottai?

But official government records show that Vijay’s November 2 visit also involved several development and welfare projects.

44 completed development projects worth Rs 68.31 crore were inaugurated by the Chief Minister while foundation stones for 70 more projects estimated at Rs 11.72 crore were laid, according to Pudukkottai district administration.

He also distributed welfare assistance of Rs 62.73 crore to 13,676 beneficiaries.

Among the major projects inaugurated during this visit was the newly constructed Pudukkottai bus terminal which was built at a cost of about Rs 23.25 crore. It has parking space for 60 buses, 74 shops/restaurants passenger waiting area and separate facilities for persons with disabilities.

Another major facility inaugurated during the programme was multipurpose indoor sports stadium constructed at a cost of around Rs 6.29 crore.

Political Differences Between DMK and TVK

Regupathy’s comments come against a backdrop of political differences between DMK and TVK government continuing.

The opposition have been criticising the government’s decisions, public programmes and development priorities while the ruling party has talked about infrastructure projects and welfare initiatives.

Vijay’s Pudukkottai visit was special as it was his first official visit to the district after becoming Chief Minister in May 2026.

The visit was also publicised TVK supporters lined the route to welcome him.

Regupathy's Remarks Add to Political Debate

The opposing positions have drawn attention to how political parties view government visits and development programmes.

The government spoke of completed projects, new foundation stones and welfare assistance but Regupathy picked out the lack of new transport routes, the way the bus stand inauguration was done and the reported postponement of examinations.

His comments are therefore part of the wider political debate about public outreach programmes and how effective they are in terms of direct impact on residents.

With DMK questioning TVK government initiatives one by one, Pudukkottai visit is another point of discussion in Tamil Nadu politics.
