Google, Microsoft and Meta Reshape Workforces: Voluntary Exit Offers and Layoffs Raise Concerns Across Tech Industry

Another major workforce shift in the global tech industry is underway as Google, Microsoft and Meta re-evaluate employee requirements as investments in AI (artificial intelligence), business priorities and cost controls increase.

These developments have brought voluntary exit programmes and large-scale layoffs back into focus questions about job security and employment in the tech sector.

Google recently announced that it was expanding its voluntary exit program to employees in five more countries (Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland). The company started making offers in June 2026 as part of reorganizing operations and shifting resources to important business areas.

The programme allows eligible employees to leave the company for severance payments. Google hasn’t said how many employees got the latest offers or how many accepted them.

In Switzerland employees who accepted the offer were reportedly paid one month’s salary for every year of service with a maximum payment of 12 months’ salary. The programme applied only to selected divisions while important units such as DeepMind were left out.

It comes as Google ramps up spending on artificial intelligence and cloud computing. It is prioritising these areas as competition heats up among the major technology players.

Microsoft Extends Voluntary Exit Offer to 60,000 Employees

Microsoft has also announced a new VEO covering 60,000 employees globally. It was announced on October 26, 2026 and is available to eligible employees in participating teams across India, the US, UK and Canada.

The offer applies to employees at internal job level 70 and below; however participation is by business division (not every employee).

Microsoft said the programme would provide financial support and career-planning resources to employees considering opportunities outside of the company.

In India eligible employees should get severance benefits which are broadly tied to years of service, health insurance and career transition support. Eligible Indian employees have until December 1 to decide.

Microsoft’s move follows earlier cuts to staff and comes as the company continues investing heavily in AI infrastructure, cloud services and other technologies.

Meta Also Faces Workforce Restructuring

Meta has also been restructuring its workforce. It announced plans to cut 8,000 jobs (about 10% of its workforce) while leaving thousands more open.

The company has been working on operational efficiency while putting a lot of money into AI, data centres and advanced computing infrastructure.

These are examples of how major technology companies are re-evaluating workforce requirements as they compete to gain market share in the AI market.

AI Investments Changing the Technology Job Market

While voluntary exit programmes are different from compulsory layoffs, both are responses to a changing employment landscape. Companies want to control operating costs but invest in technologies that will drive future growth.

For employees voluntary exit packages may offer financial support as well as the chance to explore new careers. Leaving a stable job also involves uncertainty (in a competitive technology employment market).

Google, Microsoft and Meta are still reshaping their businesses so technology industry hiring practices, employee requirements and workplace structures could be further reshaped as well.
