Tamil Nadu Vetri Laptop Scheme 2026: Who Will Get Free Laptops? Check Eligibility, Courses and Specifications

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has approved the ambitious ‘Vetri Laptop Scheme’ for college students. The state government will spend Rs 2,000 crore to give free laptops to eligible students during the 2026-27 academic year. Thousands of students studying in government and state-aided educational institutions across the state would benefit from it.

Announced in the Tamil Nadu Budget for 2026-27, the scheme aims at improving digital access, strengthening technological education and creating better employment opportunities for students from different economic backgrounds. This is the latest approval given by the TVK-led government towards implementation of its education and welfare initiatives.

The Vetri Laptop Scheme is for students pursuing undergraduate, diploma and professional courses in various disciplines. As per the guidelines of the government, first-year and second-year undergraduate students studying in government and state-aided colleges will get free laptops, while students in polytechnic and ITI diploma courses (2026-27 academic year) are also included under the scheme.

Educational streams such as arts, science, commerce, etc. have been covered so that students from different academic backgrounds can avail of digital devices. The government says laptops will help improve students’ academic performance and technical skills required in an increasingly digital learning environment.

Who Is Eligible for Tamil Nadu Vetri Laptop Scheme 2026?

The government has specified eligibility conditions so that benefits reach students studying in recognised government and state-aided institutions. Students of arts, science, engineering, medicine, veterinary science, agriculture, fisheries and law will be covered under the scheme. First-year and second-year undergraduate students who are enrolled for the 2026-27 academic year can get laptops (subject to guidelines).

The government has also taken into account students who could not get laptops under the free laptop programme of last year’s academic year. Students who missed out in 2025-26 will not lose out on this opportunity either. Students studying in third or fourth year of professional courses at government and state-aided institutions have also been included in the scheme so that those who were left out before can be covered now. With these categories being covered by the state government, eligible students across different academic years would get digital support.

Engineering Students to Get Intel Core i5 Laptops

One of the important aspects of the Vetri Laptop Scheme is the specification of devices being given to students. Tamil Nadu government has reportedly taken into account the academic and technical requirements of engineering students while finalising laptop specifications. Engineering students will get laptops with Intel Core i5 processors or equivalent processors.

This specification is relevant to students who use computers for programming, software development, engineering applications, technical projects and other academic purposes. Students in technical education often need devices with sufficient processing power to run specialised software and heavy coursework; laptops with suitable processors are expected to allow them easier participation in digital learning activities and practical assignments.

The state government has given administrative approval to the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT), a state-run body, to procure laptops. Procurement will be done as per government guidelines prescribed for procurement. Officials have been asked to ensure that the laptops are of good quality before they are distributed to students. The government wants devices that are useful for education and can support students during their academic activities.

Rs 2,000 Crore Budget for Free Laptop Distribution

The Tamil Nadu government has set aside Rs 2,000 crore for the Vetri Laptop Scheme (which was announced in the 2026-27 Budget), and now the Chief Minister has given his nod to implement it. A government order has also been issued providing administrative sanction for the funds earmarked and setting guidelines for distribution.

A high-level committee headed by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay will oversee the implementation of the scheme. The committee will keep track of the progress of the initiative and key aspects of its execution so that the programme is implemented effectively. A high-level committee would strengthen administrative coordination and help solve problems which may arise during procurement and distribution.

The Rs 2,000 crore allocation also underlines the state government’s thrust on expanding access to digital education. It is also part of the welfare agenda of the TVK-led government, which has introduced or planned several programmes with ‘Vetri’ prefix (Tamil word for victory). The Tamil word ‘Vetri’ means victory, and the government has said that development progress and opportunities for people across sections of society are what it prioritises.

How Will the Vetri Laptop Scheme Help College Students?

Access to digital devices has become an important aspect of the education system today. Students depend on laptops for online classes, research, assignments, presentations, examinations, project work and skill development, etc., but buying a laptop is expensive for students belonging to economically weaker and middle-class families. Vetri Laptop Scheme intends to reduce this financial burden and give better access to digital learning resources to students.

The government hopes that the initiative will increase students’ technological knowledge and help them to look outside classroom education. Students with laptops can take online certification programmes, learn new software, develop technical skills and access educational resources available on digital platforms. Engineering and professional course students in particular may benefit from computers for specialised academic work and practical training.

The scheme is also expected to help students prepare for future employment. Digital literacy, computer skills and familiarity with modern technologies have become important requirements across several industries. Free laptops could be used to develop these skills while they are studying and improve their readiness for the competitive job market.

All in all, the Tamil Nadu Vetri Laptop Scheme 2026 is a big investment in digital education and student welfare (Rs 2,000 crore allocated for it). With eligibility criteria, procurement arrangements and monitoring mechanisms specified, students in government and state-aided institutions will be looking forward to the distribution. Whether or not it materialises depends on timely procurement, quality assurance and delivery of laptops to eligible beneficiaries.
