Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to travel to Davos, Switzerland, in January 2027 to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting and pitch the state as an investment destination to international business leaders and global companies.
According to an NDTV exclusive published on Oct 31, the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has confirmed Vijay's participation. Scheduled from Jan 18 to 22, next year, the visit would make him the first sitting Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to personally attend the Davos gathering.
Previously, Tamil Nadu was represented at Davos by its Industries Ministers. Thangam Thennarasu led state delegations in 2022 and 2023, while his successor, TRB Rajaa, also travelled to the Swiss resort town to engage with international companies and explore investment opportunities during the previous DMK government.
The proposed visit comes amid criticism from opposition parties that Tamil Nadu is falling behind other states in attracting fresh industrial investments. The TVK government has pushed back against these allegations, accusing the Union government of favouring neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, which is governed by an NDA alliance government led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
TVK spokesperson M. Sathyakumar alleged that Tamil Nadu was not receiving adequate assistance from the Union government and the Ministry of External Affairs when approaching foreign investors.
He added that despite the lack of support from the Centre, Tamil Nadu had secured investment commitments worth more than ₹1 lakh crore. The BJP has rejected allegations of preferential treatment towards Andhra Pradesh.
The state government's strategy is not limited to attracting new foreign companies. According to the TVK spokesperson, the government also intends to approach existing international investors operating in Tamil Nadu and encourage them to expand their businesses and investments in the state.
The Davos visit is expected to provide Vijay with an opportunity to directly interact with global business leaders, investors and policymakers, while showcasing Tamil Nadu's industrial infrastructure, skilled workforce and investment potential.
For the new TVK government, the challenge will be to convert investment announcements and international discussions into operational projects, employment opportunities and long-term industrial expansion.
The visit also marks a shift in Tamil Nadu's investment-promotion strategy, with the Chief Minister himself taking the lead in approaching international investors rather than relying primarily on ministerial delegations.
