Karanikotsava of Sri Mailaralingeshwara Swamy is celebrated on the anniversary of Beerur, a historic city in Kadur taluk of Chikkamagaluru district, and thousands of devotees gathered. There were devotees from different parts of Karnataka who came together at the traditional divine oracle, Karanika, which is the only one to tell us about the next year’s events, rainfall, agricultural prospects and the future of the state and country.
The most memorable part of this year's celebration was the Karanika given by the chief priest of the temple, Dasharatha Pujar, who spoke to the gathering through the oracle: “There is no falsehood in Rama’s arrow; the land has become prosperous for creation… mighty elephants fought and light came out from the lamp of darkness… everyone must be alert!” It was in this way that the devotees listened to the message and mulled over its meaning for the coming year. The Karanika is part of the region’s religious tradition, and in the eyes of believers, it is a major spiritual announcement of the presiding deity.
Karanika of Sri Mailaralingeshwara Swamy is a popular part of the religious and cultural life in Beerur and the neighbourhood. Devotees believe that the words spoken in the annual ceremony will come true in the year. The event is therefore not only attended by people from the Chikkamagaluru district, but also by those from a number of other parts of Karnataka. For many people, it is not only a religious meeting; it’s also a place to seek divine support and to listen to what is usually considered a message about the future.
The oracle’s references to prosperity, powerful elephants, the coming of light from darkness and the need for everyone to be on guard have been of interest to devotees. Some may respond with the phrase prosperity as a positive sign for the land and its people, and to others, the reference to darkness being replaced by light, be it a symbol of hope or change.
The call to be vigilant has also attracted attention, in believers’ eyes, because it is an exhortation to be watchful for the future and to be prepared for it. But these are religious beliefs, and the oracle cannot make predictions about political, economic or environmental problems.
One of the most important aspects of the Beerur Karanikotsava is the association of rain and farming conditions. In a country where farming is still very significant to many families, they will also be interested in rain, crop growth and prosperity. Many of them look to the Karanika for spiritual advice in the next agricultural season and also for the well-being of the community.
Some of them also think the oracle is too, and provides other things in the future of Karnataka and India, but real rainfall patterns, crop yield and so on are all measurable things and need to be determined by scientific forecasts and reliable information.
The presence of thousands of devotees also showed the continuing faith and cultural significance of Sri Mailaralingeshwara Swamy in Beerur. The annual ceremony is a way of bringing people together in the spirit of sharing religious beliefs, dedication to our faith and the hope of a new year.
With Dasharatha Pujar giving the much-anticipated Karanika, this year’s function was an important one for the devotees of the temple. The message that is clearly in the spirit of warning everyone to be alert will be one that believers will continue to think about in the months to come (it’s a very important message in our opinion for the future).
