Blackstone-backed AirTrunk is investing $30 billion to provide over 5 gigawatts of data center capacity across India in 2030. A huge 3 gigawatt facility in Raigad, Maharashtra is being constructed for cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure in India as part of the initiative.

Narendra Modi, our prime minister, hailed it as a first step to develop India’s digital economy so that we can better utilize cloud services, AI innovation, job creation and local supply chains. This project is in line with India’s overall push to build a digital backbone, as demand for data storage and processing surges across industries.

Industry leaders have also welcomed the move. Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma said it was India’s largest foreign direct investment (FDI) in the data center space. With global giants like Microsoft, AWS and Google already committing to projects worth over $160 billion, AirTrunk’s pledge has much to do with driving data center growth in the country.

The Raigad facility will be the backbone of AirTrunk’s India strategy and offer hyperscale infrastructure to support enterprises, startups, and government initiatives. Such large-scale investments will not only enhance India’s digital competitiveness but also create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, and strengthen ancillary industries such as construction, power, and IT services.

But the announcement has raised concerns. Data centers consume huge amounts of water and energy, and are a problem in regions already under resource stress, experts say. Environmental campaigners have advised AirTrunk and other companies to use sustainable technologies like air cooling, renewable energy integration and advanced efficiency to minimize ecological impact.

However, the investment is in India is only one point for this digital economy to grow in the global digital economy. With AirTrunk’s commitment and similar projects from other tech giants, India is on track to become one of the largest data center markets in the world by the end of the decade. How we balance fast growth with sustainable resource management will determine how well the country will harness this digital revolution.
