This step will likely change the way millions of salaried workers receive their retirement savings allowing them to withdraw and access their savings faster, safer, and easier for them. When banks or other institutions traditionally accepted withdrawing from a provident fund (and in some of its other forms of deposits it is also done through bank transfers), it generally took several days to reflect in employees’ accounts.

With the integration of UPI, EPFO now plans to reduce this waiting time and credit the funds almost immediately. It’s an advantage especially for employees who are in a financial crunch, as the new system promises real-time settlement. During the testing phase collaboration was done with the major banks and payment service providers for a smooth integration. EPFO, for its part, has been concentrating on making security more robust for the nature of the financial transactions.

With multi-factor authentication and encrypted methods, user data is secure and erroneous withdrawals are avoided. Accessibility is another benefit of UPI-based withdrawal.

Transactions for employees will be done straight from their smartphones, thus cutting out paperwork and a need to go physically to the bank. This sits within India’s efforts to make digital financial inclusion a mainstream issue. It’s one that industry experts say might get other government-supported financial schemes off the ground, prompting more rapid benefits distributions.

It is also in line with the evolving digital world and EPFO’s commitment to bringing its services up to date. Official rollout hasn’t been announced, but the successful completion of testing means employees can enjoy instant PF withdrawals through UPI shortly. User satisfaction will be heightened, admin process will be reduced and trust in EPFO's digital transformation is bolstered.
