Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Could Face Low Stock and Delayed Availability After September Launch

Apple fans waiting for the company's long-promised first foldable iPhone may have to be patient even after the device is officially unveiled. Apple is widely expected to introduce its first foldable smartphone in September 2026, but fresh supply-chain claims suggest that the device could be extremely difficult to purchase during the early months of its availability.

Since then, Apple has not publicly confirmed the existence of a foldable iPhone or announced plans for a September launch. But the company’s foldable smartphone has been the topic of speculation and analyst reports, with supply constraints becoming one of the biggest talking points.

Initial stock could be extremely limited

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s first production of the foldable iPhone will be far below demand and could be much lower than expected. The firm estimates that only about 500,000-1 million units will be made available in the third quarter, Ming-Chi Kuo said.

Kuo has also predicted that by 2026 total shipments could be as high as 7 million to 8 million units, which suggests that production could be gradually increased after the initial launch period.

In addition, Chinese leaker Fixed Focus Digital has also claimed that the first batch of production will be extremely limited. The same claim suggests Apple could need three to five months for production to fully ramp up.

If these estimates are accurate, customers who want to buy the foldable iPhone immediately after launch are likely to have very few stocks that can be filled in time or have delivery times that are longer.

Apple Could Repeat the iPhone X Rollout Strategy

It is not entirely unprecedented for Apple to have a delayed or staggered rollout.

Kuo has compared the potential launch situation with the iPhone X, which was unveiled alongside Apple’s other premium smartphones in September 2017 but didn’t become widely available in stores until November of that year.

Apple's first foldable iPhone could potentially follow a similar pattern if manufacturing challenges prevent the company from producing enough quantities immediately after its announcement.

The complexity of foldable smartphone manufacturing might be a major reason for such delays. Foldable devices need specialized displays, hinges, and small internal components, all of which have to meet Apple's strict quality standards.

Foldable iPhone could be extremely expensive

The lack of availability may not be the only challenge for prospective buyers. The expected price of Apple's first foldable iPhone is also likely to make it one of the company's most expensive smartphones.

The most current estimates are between $ 2,300 and $ 2,500. At an exchange rate of about ₹95 to the US dollar, that would be around ₹2.18 lakh to ₹2.38 lakh, without tax, duties, and local pricing in India.

Such a price would place the device firmly in the ultra-premium smartphone segment.

A price that is high and supply is low may make the first few months difficult for consumers wanting to buy the device immediately.

In addition to the pressure, strong interest could add to the pressure.

Apple's entry into the foldable smartphone market will attract significant attention. Samsung, Google and several Chinese smartphone manufacturers have already established products in the foldable category, while Apple has so far been absent from the segment.

So a foldable iPhone could generate significant demand simply because of Apple’s brand strength and the anticipation surrounding its first entry into the category.

When there is a shortage of production, demand may quickly overwhelm inventory, and preorder waits may be longer and longer.

For Indian buyers, the actual availability and pricing will depend on Apple's official launch strategy for the country.

And Apple has so far not publicly revealed its foldable iPhone. If the September 2026 launch reports are true, it could be Apple's long-awaited entry into the foldable smartphone market.

The bigger question may not be whether Apple will launch a foldable iPhone, but how long customers will wait before they can actually get one.
