Microsoft has said it will launch a Copilot Super App, and that is a major step in the company's AI strategy. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the company is bringing together multiple Copilot experiences into a single application for both personal and enterprise users.
As part of Microsoft's AI roadmap, Nadella said Copilot is evolving far beyond a traditional chatbot.
Copilot is evolving fast from chat to coworking to autopilots. This quarter we are bringing all these Copilot experiences together, including Code, in one super app spanning both consumer and commercial experiences.
The emerging application is expected to unite several AI-powered capabilities—coding assistance, workplace collaboration, chat, autonomous AI agents and productivity tools—into one platform.
The move is consistent with Microsoft’s broader vision of simplifying AI usage by not having to make separate applications for different purposes. Instead, users can access different Copilot-powered services through a single interface.
One of the most obvious features expected in the Super App is to be able to seamlessly switch from personal Copilot to enterprise Copilot experiences. It will help users work and live with Microsoft AI tools in the workplace and everyday life more easily.
There were reports about the Super App first appearing in May 2023, and Microsoft was actively trying to merge its growing portfolio of AI products into a unified ecosystem. Nadella’s comments now seem to confirm the project is close to being launched.
Microsoft also emphasized the rapid adoption of Copilot by its users. And Nadella said user engagement has increased dramatically over the last year.
"The number of conversations per user nearly doubled year over year. Average weekly engagement is now on par with Outlook and Teams," Nadella said.
According to him, enterprise adoption has sped up considerably, with organisations reaching high monthly active usage in days rather than months after deployment.
The Super App strategy is part of a trend that’s already being seen in the technology sector. Instead of building AI tools for different purposes, companies are building integrated AI platforms that can handle communication, productivity, software development and task automation from one application.
Such “super apps” could be the next phase of consumer-facing artificial intelligence, industry experts say, offering users a central hub for AI-powered services instead of separate tools.
Microsoft's announcement also intensifies competition in the rapidly evolving AI market. OpenAI also has its own AI-based super application, and companies like Google, Meta and Anthropic are rapidly expanding their AI ecosystem.
With billions of dollars being spent on generative AI development, Microsoft’s Copilot Super App will help to cement its place in the global AI race.
While Microsoft has not announced a release date for this product, Nadella said more details will be disclosed soon. Microsoft will also look to bring you more features, availability plans, and a timeline for release in the coming months.
