OnePlus is on the verge of releasing its next flagship smartphone, OnePlus 16, in China. I suspect it will have a lot better battery and camera setup, high refresh rate and Snapdragon chipset. OnePlus has already begun to tease this phone but they do not have anything firm about the release date.
Early leaks have provided information about what's in store for the OnePlus 16. A 9,000mAh battery is expected to be the most significant feature that will be appreciated by users who value battery life. A 200-megapixel primary camera is also likely to be included so that it could be at the top of the list for the next generation camera.
OnePlus 16 display: Up to 185Hz Refresh Rate
According to tipster Digital Chat Station, the OnePlus 16 will have a BOE X4 display panel. The screen will support up to 165Hz refresh rate in regular use and up to 185Hz during gaming.
The OnePlus 15 already had a 165Hz display, but the highest refresh rate was primarily for gaming. The OnePlus 16 could expand high-refresh-rate support across a wider range of activities, and might make scrolling, animations and compatible games look smoother.
A higher refresh rate is particularly useful for gaming and fast-moving content. But actual battery consumption and performance will be dependent on how OnePlus implements the technology and whether users can manually change the refresh rate.
The battery will probably be one of the major highlights of OnePlus 16. Leaks indicate that the smartphone would have a 9,000mAh battery and a rated capacity of 8,780mAh.
The phone will also support 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. The battery could be dual-cell and is expected to be able to provide a good charging performance as well as internal space to the company.
If that happens, the OnePlus 16 could be the right choice for long-term gaming, streaming video, social media or navigation services use. A bigger battery would mean less need for frequent charging, but the real-world endurance will be determined by display settings, processor efficiency, network usage and software optimisation.
200MP Camera Could be a Major upgrade.
OnePlus 16 photography could also undergo a major upgrade. The new phone could have a 200-megapixel primary camera with a 1/1.4 inch sensor.
The primary camera might be combined with a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with a 1/1.95-inch sensor. That combination would give the phone dedicated hardware for standard photography, wider scenes and long-distance shots.
But megapixel count alone does not determine camera quality. The image processing, sensor performance, lens quality, stabilisation and computational photography capabilities of OnePlus will also matter. The final camera performance can only be evaluated once the company officially announces the device and independent testing is available.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro Chipset
OnePlus 16 is also expected to get a new Qualcomm flagship processor. The leak claims that the smartphone could be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset.
The processor is based on a 2nm manufacturing process and could have an octa-core CPU in a 2+3+3 configuration and an Adreno 850 GPU. If these details are true, the chipset might greatly improve processing speed, graphics performance and power efficiency over previous generations.
And the combination of the flagship processor and the high refresh rate display will make the OnePlus 16 very relevant to mobile gamers. But benchmark performance and sustained gaming results will be determined by the thermal management, software optimisation and final hardware configuration.
OnePlus 16 launch date and India availability.
It is not yet clear if OnePlus 16 will be released in China, or will be released worldwide in November.
The situation in India is less certain. OnePlus 16 may not be launched in India, although the company could launch a OnePlus 16R variant in India.
These reports are unconfirmed for now. OnePlus has not publicly announced the India launch plans, full specifications or pricing of the upcoming smartphone.
