OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT Ads in India and has sponsored content to its popular AI chatbot, giving businesses in one of the world’s fastest-growing AI markets a new advertising opportunity. It is the first time OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT advertising in India, and the ads are targeting logged-in adult users on Free and Go plans.
The move is a significant change to the ChatGPT experience for users who depend on the platform for everything from learning and research to product discovery and everyday questions. However, OpenAI has stated that the advertising rollout will be separated from the chatbot’s core answers and the company also said that advertisers won't be able to see users’ private conversations.
According to OpenAI, advertisements will be available to users aged 18 and above who are signed into the Free or ChatGPT Go plans. Paid plans (ChatGPT Plus and Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans) will still support ChatGPT without advertisements.
More than 50 brands will begin advertising on ChatGPT in India during the first launch period. OpenAI will also be working with major advertising groups WPP and Omnicom as its first agency partners in the Indian market. The agencies have experience in brand strategy, creative development, measurement, campaign execution and brand safety, the company said.
The partnership is expected to show advertisers how marketing can be done in an AI context. In contrast to search or social media advertising, ChatGPT offers people responses and recommendations with a chat prompt, so that brands can reach out to customers who are actively using products, services or ideas in a conversational environment.
For businesses looking to advertise directly, OpenAI is also preparing to expand access to its ChatGPT Ads Manager. Self-serve access will be available on September 4 and businesses will be able to create and manage their own advertising campaigns instead of having to rely on agency partners.
One of the most important aspects for advertisers is the starting budget. OpenAI has said that daily advertising budgets will start at Rs 725, which could make the platform accessible to smaller businesses as well as large brands. The self-serve system will give advertisers more control over campaign creation and spending as ChatGPT’s advertising ecosystem develops in India.
Dave Dugan, Vice President and Head of Global Ads Solutions at OpenAI, said India is an important market because people use ChatGPT to learn, build and discover information. ChatGPT Ads are designed so businesses can reach users at the right time with the same core features that make the platform so useful, he said.
OpenAI also outlined some controls for users. Users will be able to dismiss advertisements, give feedback and find out why a particular ad was shown. They will also have options to manage ad personalisation and clear information used for advertising purposes.
Privacy remains one of the major issues in bringing advertising to an AI chatbot. OpenAI says advertisers will not have access to individual ChatGPT conversations. Instead, businesses will get aggregated campaign results (impressions and clicks). It means that advertisers are not supposed to be able to see a user's private chat history as part of the advertising system.
OpenAI has also put restrictions on where ads can appear. Ads will not be shown to users who identify themselves as under 18 or users the system predicts might be under 18. The company has also said advertisements will not appear alongside some sensitive or regulated subjects such as politics and mental health.
The launch is also a potentially new revenue source for OpenAI as the company continues to expand ChatGPT's reach. In particular, India, with its rapidly growing internet population and increasing adoption of AI tools, has huge potential for conversational advertising.
For users, the biggest immediate difference will depend on their ChatGPT subscription. Free and Go users will see ads as the rollout expands, while subscribers to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans will still have an ad-free experience.
With self-serve advertising coming in September, ChatGPT’s role in India’s digital advertising ecosystem will grow increasingly significant in the coming months. OpenAI will have to balance commercial opportunities for brands with user privacy, relevance and trust, ensuring that sponsored content does not interfere with the chatbot’s primary function of providing useful and independent answers.
