StepFun Unveils StepX Neo, Claims World's First Agentic AI Smartphone with Built-In AI Assistant

Chinese artificial intelligence startup StepFun announced StepX Neo, a smartphone that is the world’s first LLM-native agentic AI smartphone. StepFun has also launched its own operating system, Step AOS, and an AI assistant called Step Amoo to help users interact with smartphones.

The launch is part of a growing trend in Chinese technology companies to create tightly integrated ecosystems that integrate AI models, software, and hardware to move beyond chatbots.

What makes StepX Neo different?

Unlike smartphones that depend on AI for voice commands or basic assistance, the StepX Neo is built around an agentic AI system. This means that the built-in AI assistant is designed to handle complex multi-step tasks on behalf of users with minimal manual input.

Step Amoo can understand natural language requests and perform actions in various apps without the need to switch applications, said StepFun. A user could ask the assistant to plan a trip, book appointments, send messages, organise schedules, or complete workflows with just one command.

The aim is to make smartphones more proactive, so that they don’t have to manually take the action step by step.

Step AOS: A New AI-First Operating System.

The device powering Step AOS is a custom operating system for agentic AI experiences. Rather than AI as an optional feature of the system, Step AOS integrates AI deeply into every element of the system.

This helps the AI assistant to better access various applications and system features more efficiently, therefore making task automation and contextual understanding easier.

Now, there’s a shift beyond AI Assistants: Just beyond traditional AI Assistants.

Most AI assistants these days are primarily answering questions, generating text, or responding to voice commands. StepFun says StepX Neo is the next step in AI by providing a more autonomous assistant that can do everything on its own.

It is a strategy the company believes can transform smartphones from simply mobile phones into intelligent digital assistants capable of performing everyday tasks without the user’s input.

Claims yet to be verified

Even though the announcement has generated quite a bit of interest, many of StepFun's claims are still unverified.

The company also claims that its on-device AI model has outperformed in benchmark tests. But has not released detailed benchmark scores or independent performance data to support this claim.

Similarly, real-world tests of the StepX Neo have not yet been conducted, and so we are not yet able to judge how well the device works outside of controlled demonstrations.

Technology experts say such an agentic smartphone will truly be successful if the AI is able to efficiently perform complex tasks and not make mistakes on the job.

Growing Competition in AI Hardware

The launch of StepX Neo comes as world tech companies are racing to embed advanced AI directly into consumer devices. Smartphone manufacturers are investing heavily in on-device AI that can process information locally, speed up the process, reduce reliance on cloud services, and increase the privacy of users.

StepFun’s announcement also highlights China’s rapidly expanding AI ecosystem in which startups are building complete AI platforms that integrate proprietary language models, operating systems, and consumer hardware.

Looking Ahead

However, the StepX Neo has a very large vision for AI-powered phones and will only be fully operational in the real world once independent reviews and wider consumer adoption are available.

If the company's claims are confirmed, agentic AI smartphones would represent a significant transformation in mobile computing in which users would delegate more complex digital tasks to intelligent assistants rather than having to deal with individual apps.

For now, the StepX Neo is a fantastic glimpse of what the next generation of AI-enabled smartphones could look like - while its promises are still in need of independent evaluation.
