Vivo is set to launch its next-gen flagship smartphone lineup in China, with the Vivo X500 series officially announced for September 21, 2026. The new series will be heavily camera tech heavy, performance and display upgrades as well as one of the first smartphone lineups associated with MediaTek’s next gen flagship processor.
The X500 series is expected to consist of the standard Vivo X500, Vivo X500 Pro and Vivo X500 Pro Max. Vivo has been slowly revealing bits of information ahead of the launch but some of the specs circulating online are unconfirmed so take them with a pinch of salt (expectations not final specs).
One of the biggest developments surrounding the new phones is that they’re linked to MediaTek’s next flagship Dimensity platform. MediaTek has said it will have an event on September 15 where we should see the Dimensity 9600 Pro introduced — it’s being billed as the company’s first Pro-grade flagship chipset built using a 2nm manufacturing process.
The timing is particularly interesting because the Vivo X500 series launch follows just six days later. Earlier reports had said that the X500 lineup could be among the first smartphones to use MediaTek’s new flagship processors and now recent reports also say Vivo has confirmed that the X500 Pro series will run on next generation 2nm MediaTek platform.
Performance is not all Vivo has going for the X500 series. Photography and videography too are getting a lot of attention as well. Vivo has teased improvements to camera hardware and software ahead of launch so imaging will surely be one of the key selling points of the new flagship range.
The Pro models should see the most camera upgrades. Reports have said that the Vivo X500 Pro could have a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 50-megapixel ultra wide camera and a periscope telephoto (64MP) sensor. The X500 Pro Max is tipped to go even further with a 200MP periscope telephoto lens for long range photography. All of these specs haven’t been confirmed yet so they should be taken as indicative until Vivo makes an official announcement.
Display technology is another area where Vivo seems ready to make a change. The X500 Pro Max has been officially linked with 2K AMOLED display — an important step forward for the X-series Pro lineup. Earlier we had also heard about different screen sizes for the Pro and Pro Max models but exact specs could differ depending on final configuration.
The launch also happens at a very busy time for the global smartphone industry. September 2026 has become a month of flagship smartphone announcements (many manufacturers are prepping new devices and next gen processors). This puts Vivo’s X500 series in a competitive space where camera performance, artificial intelligence capabilities, battery life and chipset efficiency are all important factors.
For Indian buyers the China launch will be closely watched because the Vivo X500 series is expected to arrive in India after its domestic debut. Reports are already saying October but Vivo hasn’t announced the Indian date of launch yet so pricing and exact India-specific configurations remain unknown.
The September 21 China launch will show us what Vivo has in store for its new flagship generation. Until then the combination of a next gen MediaTek chipset, better imaging hardware and higher resolution display have already created lots of buzz around the X500 series.
With MediaTek expected to announce its new flagship processor on September 15 and Vivo announcing X500 series on September 21, the two announcements could make this one of the most important weeks for Android flagship technology in September. More concrete information about pricing, availability, battery capacity, camera configurations and India launch plans should come once Vivo officially unveils the phones.
