WhatsApp Rolls Out Liquid Glass Design for Mac, Tests Apple Microphone Controls on iPhone

WhatsApp is preparing a fresh batch of updates that aim to improve the look and functionality of its apps across Apple's ecosystem. Mac users are going to see a new interface inspired by Apple's new Liquid Glass design language, but iPhone users may soon have easier access to its built-in microphone controls for voice and video calls.

All of these features are being tested right now and will enhance the overall user experience on macOS and iOS.

Apple Microphone Controls coming to WhatsApp on iPhone

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing a feature that allows iPhone users to switch between Apple's microphone modes directly from the WhatsApp call interface.

The feature was spotted in WhatsApp for iOS beta version 26.27.74.

Now, users need to open Control Center during a call to change microphone settings. The new shortcut will eliminate this extra step by letting users switch audio modes without leaving the call screen.

The microphone modes available are:

  • Standard - The default audio processing for most calls.
  • Voice Isolation - It is sensitive to the voice of the speaker, reduces background noise, and is suitable for noisy environments.
  • Wide Spectrum - It captures a wider range of sounds in the environment, which is useful when people are talking (or in a group call).

With these controls integrated directly into WhatsApp, users can quickly change the settings of their audio at a given location, and voice and video call quality can be improved.

Easier Call Management

The new shortcut will help to make in-call controls easier.

Instead of having to navigate through the Control Center every time they need to adjust microphone settings, users will be able to change audio processing with just a tap from within the WhatsApp interface.

This efficient method will be quite useful for users who have to shift from quiet indoor environments to noisy outdoors during calls.

Liquid Glass Design Arrives on Mac

Besides the iPhone enhancement, WhatsApp has also revamped the Mac app's visuals.

The update brings Apple’s Liquid Glass design language to desktop messaging, making for a more modern and polished experience.

The redesign includes:

  • More translucent interface elements.
  • Remodeled buttons and menus.
  • Better visual consistency with the latest macOS.
  • Cleaner and more modern.

With the visual refresh, WhatsApp is more closely aligned with the development of Apple's software design in macOS.

Beta Testing Underway

At present, the microphone shortcut is only available to beta testers using WhatsApp for iOS version 26.27.74.

As with most beta features, there is no official timeline for a wider public release. Meta may continue to refine the functionality based on user feedback before releasing it to all eligible iPhone users.

As for the new Liquid Glass user interface for Macs, it will be rolled out gradually.

What this means for Users

These updates are in line with WhatsApp’s focus on improving the user experience on all Apple devices.

The microphone shortcut might make voice and video calls more convenient by giving users access to Apple's more advanced audio processing modes, and the redesigned Mac interface has a more contemporary look that complements the current macOS aesthetic.

Although Meta has not formally announced a date for either of these features to be released, the beta testing indicates that they could be released in the future.

As WhatsApp continues to evolve, we will see more improvements to communicate better, more intuitively, and more user-friendly, and better integrated with Apple's hardware and software ecosystem.
