Tim Cook, Apple’s longtime CEO, and the company’s senior executive John Ternus are set to be the company’s next chief executive officer. Beginning Sept. 1, 2026, the transition will mark the end of Cook's nearly 15 years at the helm of the company-owner.
From serving as the former chief executive, he will serve as the executive chairman. To put it another way, he will still provide support on strategic issues and policy, and put immediate control of everyday affairs in Ternus’ hands.
Who’s John Ternus?
John Ternus holds over 20 years of experience with Apple and has worked there for more than two decades. He started working at Apple in 2001 with the staff members who designed its product line and soon rose to Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2013 and Senior Vice President in 2021.
For years of Apple’s tenure, he has been instrumental in the development of some of Apple’s best-selling products, including the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and AirPods or more. Therefore, Ternus has greatly enhanced Apple hardware innovation.
And as both engineer and engineer-first boss, he has helped ensure that Apple steers itself into in-house silicon chips and has revamped its portfolio, which includes Mac products. He has spent decades climbing up the company ranks, suggesting that eventually he might as well come to replace Cook.
Why Apple Chose Ternus
Apple’s board cast the leadership transition as a part of a long-term succession plan that prioritised continuity over disruption. Cook himself praised Ternus as an innovator and principled leader who understood Apple’s culture and products intimately. Ternus is now 50, a very busy position for a CEO. Apple remains one of the world’s most valuable companies, but it’s now more aggressive on artificial intelligence and next-generation tech fronts.
The Road Ahead
Ternus, then, will be leading Apple through its next phase of expansion as it infuses new technology, such as AI, with its native brand. It will also be embedding new strength in hardware-based technology by putting some new products with the company’s hardware foundation.
Analysts are telling us his new leadership is an indication that Apple looks to continue its product-focused approach and focus by taking baby steps, instead of taking sweeping steps ahead with the rest of us. Ternus is coming to the Apple board as he becomes a full member. Ternus also joins Apple’s board while stepping into its leading role, taking the helm of the tech behemoth in a hypercompetitive universe.
For Apple, a historic transition that would create a new epoch-making company, it only serves as the company's third CEO of the modern era to join the world after the legacies of Steve Jobs and Tim Cook.
