Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said affordability will be a key issue for Microsoft’s next generation console because hardware and component costs are going up and gaming devices are getting more expensive.
Sharma said Xbox will need to be able to think about efficiency and affordability as well as performance as it prepares for its next generation of hardware in order to have high efficiency and affordability and that Xbox will need to look at efficiency and affordability and performance when developing its next generation of hardware, she said.
The comments come as Microsoft is continuing to work on its next-generation Xbox, Project Helix. The company has not released the final price or complete specifications of the console yet, but the increasing memory and storage costs are already causing concern about how expensive future gaming hardware could be.
Huge hardware costs are a problem.
The biggest problem for the gaming industry is the increasing price of electronic components used in modern electronics.
Due to the growth of artificial intelligence, demand for computing hardware, including memory and other components, has increased. That has put more pressure on supply and prices of all technology sources.
Sharma described the current situation as a “Rampocalypse,” the sudden rise in demand and prices for memory-related components. And she said the industry needs to think differently about how it develops and prices future hardware.
For Xbox, that is a very difficult balance.
Each updated console generation will come with better graphics, faster performance and better technology to the games’ players’ eyes. But high-end hardware prices can also make it more expensive.
Xbox needs to improve its performance, but not so much that it’s priced out of the reach of most regular players.
Project Helix Is The Next Xbox
Microsoft is working on its next-generation Xbox under the codename Project Helix.
The new hardware should marry aspects of traditional console gaming with PC gaming. Microsoft has also said the next-generation hardware will support a wider range of gaming experiences.
The firm has not yet announced when the launch is going to happen or retail price of the product.
However, there have been reports that the next Xbox could arrive around 2027, even though Microsoft has not officially confirmed that date.
The cost of the console has become one of the biggest questions of Project Helix.
And with component prices rising, all the more powerful next-generation hardware may become much more expensive than current consoles.
Sharma’s comments indicate that Xbox knows about the problem and is already thinking about how to keep the future hardware accessible.
Performance is not the only goal to be reached.
For years, console manufacturers have focused heavily on improving hardware performance with each new generation.
More powerful processors, better graphics capabilities, faster storage and more memory have helped console games to be more sophisticated.
But better hardware also comes at a higher cost.
Sharma’s comments indicate that Xbox doesn’t want to just develop the most powerful console possible without considering the price.
Instead, the company wants to find a balance between performance, efficiency and affordability.
That might be hardware choice options that differ, or the efficiency of components or new ways of selling the console.
The aim would be that the next generation would be able to access the next generation without a very high upfront cost.
Could Xbox explore new business models?
Affordability may not be simply a matter of physical design of the console.
Sharma has previously expressed the possibility of new business models that could make gaming hardware more accessible.
Earlier this year, she said the industry might have to look at different ways of making and selling consoles because rising component costs could make it difficult for mass-market consumers to spend thousands of dollars on a new generation of hardware.
This would open the door to different payment options, partnerships or hardware configurations.
Xbox could also continue to utilize its entire ecosystem to reach players who don’t want to buy a very expensive console.
Game Pass, cloud gaming and PC gaming are Microsoft’s services that reach gamers on multiple platforms.
In the future, that will be even more necessary if new hardware becomes more expensive.
What about physical game discs?
Another big question about Project Helix is whether the next Xbox will have a physical disc drive.
Sharma has not yet mentioned if the upcoming console will support physical discs.
When asked about the issue, she focused instead on efficiency and affordability, while acknowledging that many gamers still value physical media.
Xbox also launched a Disc-to-Digital programme to get digital versions of some games on disc for players.
When Microsoft decides to do this, they could make a digital-oriented next-generation console.
However, Xbox has not confirmed that Project Helix will be disc-free.
Still, it appears that the company is open to anything.
Price is already hurting gaming.
The affordability concerns as well as the future are not limited to the future game market.
We can already see that current gaming hardware is more expensive.
In the U.S., average console prices increased by 16% in July compared with a year before, while console unit sales dropped sharply. The hardware price has also been getting hit by memory and component costs that have risen by more than 20%.
Xbox has also increased the prices of some of its current hardware and services.
Microsoft recently announced a special 25th Anniversary Xbox Series X priced at $899.99 in the U.S., showing how expensive premium console hardware can become.
That is why Project Helix affordability discussion is so important.
Microsoft wants more players to come to its ecosystem.
Microsoft wants the next generation to be affordable for consumers, too.
It is also important for the company's wider gaming strategy.
Xbox wants to increase the number of people using its games and services. If the cost of entering the next generation becomes too high, some players may decide to stay with older hardware, move to PCs or choose competing platforms.
And a lower-cost entry point may therefore help Xbox attract more players.
Microsoft is also expanding its gaming ecosystem beyond its console-oriented gaming ecosystem (to PC gaming, cloud services and other hardware companies).
This leaves the company with options other than console sales.
What gamers can expect
For now, we should not expect an official price announcement of Project Helix based on Sharma's comments.
Xbox has not disclosed how much the next-generation console will cost, and the final price will depend upon hardware specifications, component prices and Microsoft’s business strategy.
What Sharma has made clear is that Xbox has understood to keep the next generation accessible.
And the company does not want to sacrifice performance, but it also knows that a console that is too expensive will struggle to attract a mass audience.
That balance could influence many of the decisions Microsoft makes before Project Helix reaches the market.
A different way to the next generation
The next Xbox generation may look very different from the console prior to it.
Instead of focusing on raw hardware power only, Microsoft may be more focused on efficiency and pricing in the same way to give players more options and different ways to play games.
That could be hardware and software, partnerships, digital services or new payment models. For gamers, affordability will be one of the biggest factors to watch.
The next generation is due to bring about a lot of performance improvements, but those upgrades will be negligible if the hardware becomes too expensive for a large portion of the gaming community.
Sharma's comments show that Xbox is aware of that challenge.
Microsoft will need to find that balance between power, performance and price in Project Helix as Microsoft continues to develop, and it’s going to be hard to do so. For Xbox, making the next generation more affordable might be just as important as making it more powerful.
