YouTube Down: Global Outage Causes 'Something Went Wrong' Errors

Across the globe, millions of people today, February 18, 2026, watched as YouTube stumbled on one of the worst global down-times in some time and was greeted with empty screens and message errors. It struck video-sharing platform YouTube Music and YouTube TV early the following morning, after it sowed its problems in the evenings of late Tuesday, Tuesday first.

Widespread Disruption

At the peak of the incident, the outage tracking site Downdetector recorded a huge spike in reports and, at that moment, in the US alone, over 280,000 complaints were registered. The spike was similar across India, as well as in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

Upon trying to reach the site or app, people were bombarded with a constant and troubling "Something went wrong" notification. Some common themes and issues identified are:

  • Video Playback Issues: A rough 18 percent of users reported that, despite being able to see the interface, videos would not come on and would not buffer.
  • App Crashes: Users who use iOS and Android mobile apps said the app would close right out of the gate.
  • Blank Home Feeds: Numerous users saw a “sidebar only” view of the app with no content coming from the main feed.

Impact on YouTube Music and YouTube TV

The blackout was not restricted to the regular platform. YouTube TV subscribers said they had not been able to stream live television, and YouTube Music users said their libraries were out of reach. The disruption follows the first major outage on social media platform X, which stoked speculation about the stability of broader internet infrastructure.

Google’s Response

As of early Wednesday morning IST, YouTube has not provided any specific technical explanation for the crash. The company acknowledged the problem in a short comment on social media:

“Some of you are having trouble at the moment accessing YouTube, YouTube Music or YouTube TV, we hear you. We will investigate this and keep you updated.”

Yet services have picked up some of these North American and European services, while many in Asia Pacific still lack continuous connection for customers.

What to Do If You Are Still Affected

If the "Something went wrong" error is persistently present, experts in technology suggest:

  • Clearing the Browser Cache: Users whose computer typically serves as the server must ensure that any error pages are cleared of cookie and cache.
  • Check for App Updates: Check if your mobile app has been updated by checking the latest version on the App Store or Play Store.
  • Patience: Access may be spotty for the next few hours as the fix rolls out onto global servers.
