YouTube View Farm Busted: Police Expose Fake Views Racket with Phones Mounted to Ceiling

In a gamechanger, police discovered a sophisticated YouTube “view farm” operation that was set up during the long surveillance tour. Dozens of smartphones installed at a ceiling were running at a constant pace to pump fake traffic into the site to make it look like there is a big audience.

The operation was initiated after a tip-off in which there was suspicious digital activity. Acting on that information, a covert investigation started, and investigators were able to trace the illegal activity to a rented place - the illegal setup - which was being run. What they found in revealed the deep-seated desire to be at the top in our society to simply "win" people's mind as money.

Police found cells of smartphones sitting together, some attached to makeshift ceiling chains. Users had connected to automated systems that repeatedly played certain videos with increased watch times, the report says, which could increase views over and over. Some had been customized to simulate user engagement, showing likes and shares and watches so that the activity looked natural.

Investigation also revealed that the operation was used to promote YouTube channels, generate ad revenue and promote content creators' followers. In those types of setups with the view count being inflated, they may cause the marketing company to appeal to more people, or the content creator gets more brand rewards, or the algorithms on the website or app can send some videos on as a result.

The racket may have been part of an entire network offering “digital growth services” to businesses willing to pay for fake engagement. These services often promise fast increases in views, subscribers, and social media reach in the short term and those who are new or struggling content creators tend to prefer that.

But experts warn that such a practice violates YouTube’s guidelines and can result in channel suspension, demonetization and permanent bans. Also in the process and operating and monitoring that channel there should be legal action of cybercrime and fraud from legal and auditing charges by law enforcement.

The bust has been a topic of much conversation online, and many saw their own eyes as they marvel at the size and ingenuity of the set up. As for some people describing the visuals weird as a joke and strange as this picture is, others felt there is an increasing amount of pressure in digital media to win (and win) viral awards so they go viral.

As cyber security experts state, viewing farming will not only hurt even the most promising competition but it threatens trust in digital technology. And this is something with which genuine creators cannot compete with artificially bolstered content.

Police have seized the equipment and are now investigating the operation. Clients may have used any kind of service to have their image spread online.

The incident is a reminder of the dark side of the digital economy itself, how in chase of views, likes and fame one can cross ethical and legal lines. With platforms tightening regulations, such crackdowns are likely to increase in the future and this is just one way to raise the bar on this side of the digital business so this is not what business as usual that if anything we must fight the hard in order to be able to make money that is to ensure this kind of effort to get something of value.
