Four arrested by Charminar Police for Assaulting Interfaith Couple and Infant

The Charminar police in Hyderabad have arrested four teenagers after a shocking incident of moral policing, physical harassment and assault against an interfaith couple. The clash took place not far from the historic Makkah Masjid and the bustling Charminar marketplace and drew widespread condemnation as a video showing the targeted intimidation and distress of the couple’s infant daughter went viral on social media platforms.

Moral Policing turns violent.

The targeted harassment took place when a couple of interfaith people, a father with his infant daughter and his burqa-clad wife, were intercepted by a group of local youths. The attackers surrounded the family when they found out the husband and wife were from different faiths. They were aggressive towards the woman and asked why she was traveling with the man and what they were doing. The husband repeatedly pleaded with them to stop and said that the woman was his wife and the baby was their daughter. They did not listen and instead slapped him repeatedly. The group then jerked the newborn child from the father’s arms and pulled the baby away crying so much so as to crush her. The attackers recorded the entire attack on their mobile phones and then asked the husband to show his Aadhaar card to prove his identity.

Swift Action by Charminar Police.

The incident was uncovered when the attackers posted the video to WhatsApp and X (formerly Twitter) and it went viral rapidly. Given the ferocity of the communal provocation, a Sub-Inspector from the Charminar division noticed the video’s digital location. The Charminar Police Station immediately opened a suo motu case and deployed specialist teams to track down the suspects through digital footprinting and local intelligence. After a few days, law enforcement officers tracked the four primary suspects. All four are 19 years old and are identified as:

• Shaik Ayan (alias Ali)

• Syed Firdous

• Mohmd Shabaz

• Mohd Farhan Ahmed.

The detectives seized the group’s smartphones that contained raw footage from the fight. Digital evidence has been sent to forensic validation for evidence to be collected and used for the judicial trial.

Strict Legal charges.

The Hyderabad Police have booked the four men under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act to act as a deterrent against vigilante moral policing. Senior police officials have confirmed that self-styled moral policing and communal profiling will not be tolerated and the team of digital monitoring will be monitoring platforms to prevent any attempt to disrupt communal harmony in Hyderabad.
