A video of two young women being repeatedly slapped and confronted by a group of men went viral in Ranga Reddy district in Telangana. The incident took place in Almasguda area near Dr B.R Ambedkar statue under Meerpet Police Station limits.
The men confronted the women over accusations that they were trying to lure children with chocolates and persuade them into religious conversion (although those allegations haven’t been independently verified).
The video doing the rounds on social media shows the women being questioned by the men (one of them repeatedly slapping them), with the women begging the group to let them go. They say they had come to the locality to visit their aunt.
One of the men is heard asking the women what they were doing religious activities and whether they had any religious material with them. He also tries to check their bags while using abusive language towards them.
The footage has been widely shared on social media where people were upset about how the two women were treated. It has also reignited discussions around public safety, religious freedom and whether allegations should be dealt with legally rather than physically confronted.
Police Begin Verification
Meerpet Police said the confrontation took place in Almasguda. However, they added that no formal complaint was lodged so far in connection with the incident.
Police are still checking the video and collecting details about what happened during the confrontation. Authorities are also trying to identify the women involved in the fight as well as those seen on the footage.

Meerpet Police Station House Officer B. Shoban reportedly said that they were looking into the footage to identify those involved and if required police could take suo motu cognizance of the matter.
The fact that there is no complaint hasn’t stopped the video from going viral though: several social media users have called for an investigation and action against those responsible for the alleged assault.
Political Reaction and Calls for Action
Former Telangana minister and BRS MLA Sabitha Indra Reddy also reacted to the incident. She condemned the alleged assault and demanded that Telangana Police identify the culprits and take legal action against them.
She said disagreements or objections to religious activities should be dealt with in legal ways and cannot be used as grounds for physically attacking women.
The MLA also asked authorities to ensure safety of the women and take action against those responsible.
The video is still being shared online so the police investigation and verification of the allegations are ongoing. Authorities should check the footage available and establish what happened in full.
For now the allegations against the women are unverified and the police have not announced what they found. The incident has once again demonstrated that law enforcement agencies should be allowed to investigate allegations without intimidation or violence.
