Haryana Chokes on Toxic Air: AQI Crosses 300 in 5 Cities Ahead of Diwali

Air pollution is becoming a major issue in Haryana with several cities getting severely polluted ahead of Diwali. As per latest CPCB data, five cities in the state have AQI levels above 300 (very poor category). Bahadurgarh has been worst affected city and health of residents there is at risk.

The rise in pollution levels comes as preparations for the festival of Diwali are in full swing. Winter is here and deteriorating weather and increasing pollution are adding to worries about the quality of air across the state.

Bahadurgarh Records Haryana's Highest AQI

The AQI for Bahadurgarh was 324 on November 4 the most polluted city among the five cities crossing 300.

Other areas in Gurugram that were badly affected by the AQI are Panchgaon (320), Ballabhgarh (319), Manesar (309) and Gurugram (305).

These readings show that air quality has deteriorated in many parts of Haryana (especially around NCR).

Apart from these five places, seven other cities in Haryana Ambala, Karnal and Rohtak also have poor air quality. Residents are worried about the worsening situation as pollution levels continue to rise before festival day.

Why Is Air Quality Deteriorating

Several environmental and weather related factors are thought to be behind the increase in pollution levels.

In the beginning of November, lower temperatures, slower wind speeds and unfavourable weather conditions can make pollutants stick together so that dust particles and emissions are trapped closer to the ground (pollution concentration increases).

Vehicular emissions, construction activities, industrial pollution and others also add to the overall pollution burden in cities.

Stubble burning in neighbouring agricultural areas is another factor which can affect air quality across Haryana and wider NCR region during this period.

The problem is that pollution levels are already on the rise before Diwali starts. Firecrackers used during the festival can add to the load of pollutants so already polluted areas may get worse.

What Does an AQI Above 300 Mean

Under CPCB’s air quality classification an AQI between 301 and 400 is very poor. Prolonged exposure to such conditions can cause respiratory discomfort especially in people with existing breathing problems.

Children, the elderly and people with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions may be more vulnerable to the effects of polluted air.

Residents should limit prolonged outdoor activity when pollution levels are high and follow local health advisories.

Pollution Concerns Grow Ahead of Diwali

Five Haryana cities have AQI readings above 300 already and the air quality is a major concern ahead of Diwali. Bahadurgarh has an AQI of 324 which shows how serious the situation is. Gurugram, Manesar, Ballabhgarh and Panchgaon are also very poor.

Residents and authorities will be watching closely how pollution levels are in the coming days. Will weather bring some respite or festive celebrations add to the burden of pollution . That’s what Haryana needs to watch out for.
