One person has been killed and multiple people were injured in clashes between two communities in Thoubal district of Manipur after violence erupted between two communities Sunday night, October 18, 2026. The violence erupted in Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham villages which led the district administration to issue prohibitory orders and hire more security personnel to avoid a conflict.
Police also said some houses and vehicles were destroyed and that the situation was under control by Monday morning, October 19.
What triggered the Clashes in Thoubal?
Police said tensions in Khangabok village, about 25 kilometres south of Imphal, escalated when a group of people started throwing stones towards a nearby ground where a concert was going on on Sunday night.
The incident was later reported to have turned into stone-pelting between two communities in Khangabok and neighbouring Sangaiyumpham. Some houses and vehicles were set on fire during the fighting.
The exact circumstances that led to the first confrontation are not well-established in the initial reports. Security measures were being reinforced in the affected areas.
One person killed in firing
Police identified the deceased as Laishram Rakesh. He suffered a gunshot to the head after unknown persons opened fire during the violence, police said.
He was taken to a hospital but died of his injuries later on.
Several other people were injured in the clashes including cuts caused by stones. The injured got admitted to hospitals for treatment. Initial reports did not include a full list of those who were injured.
The identity of the person or persons responsible for the shooting and the circumstances surrounding the firing were not established in the initial reports.
Prohibitory Orders imposed in two Villages
The Thoubal district administration issued prohibitory orders on Sunday night, telling residents of Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham to remain indoors from 11 pm.
The restrictions were made under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) which grants powers under the law to authorities to make temporary orders in order to prevent the threat to public safety and public tranquillity.
The district magistrate said breach of peace, disturbance of public order and danger to human life and property were possibilities.
The order didn’t specify when the restrictions would be lifted. Residents were to comply with the orders as authorities sought to prevent further violence.
Additional Security Forces Deployed
Following the clashes, more state and central security forces were sent to Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham, as well as to other areas in the country. Police said the situation was now in control by Monday morning.
Security forces were deployed to maintain order and minimize the danger of further confrontations. In the affected villages the authorities were following developments.
The latest incident has again raised concerns on public safety in Manipur, a state that has faced recurring episodes of violence and community tensions.
Investigation and Security Measures.
The death, injuries and damage to property has raised questions about the circumstances that led to the confrontation. Authorities are expected to investigate the sequence of events, including firing and the burning of houses and vehicles.
In the absence of any other violence and a large number of security personnel in place, the immediate focus is to prevent further escalation of violence, protecting residents.
There are some official updates that are required to establish what happened and to find out who conducted it, and if the restrictions have been lifted.
